Are there any upcoming shows (especially for Paphs & Phrags) in New England in the Maine, NH, or MA area? What about shows on Long Island, NY?
Thanks,

Thanks, Susan Paphgirl April 30th, 2005, 01:02 PM Hi Susan, As far as I know we're about done in NE until next October when Lyman Estate in Waltham, MA has its' annual fall sale. November generally there are a couple, and then more in Feb-April. NHOS is really good about listing all the area events. Check them out here: http://www.nhorchids.org/meetings.htm dustyatticstuff April 30th, 2005, 01:53 PM Thanks Heather! That's very helpful. I think I'm starting to spend my daughter's inheritance on Paphs! ('') ('') I'd love to see what they sell at shows. I feel so isolated here in Maine...so far from everything. Fortunately I have family on Long Island and could visit while attending shows there or in Manhattan. Best, Susan Paphgirl April 30th, 2005, 02:00 PM Susan, how far up are you? I know how you feel though, even being in Central MA I haven't joined a society because all of them meet at least an hour away from me. Frustrating! dustyatticstuff April 30th, 2005, 05:31 PM Heather, I'm about 60 miles north of Portsmouth, NH, but west of Portland. Northern MA would be doable. I recall seeing something about a show or group in Bangor, ME, but that is 150 miles away: much further than Massachusetts. That's why I was so happy to have run into this forum. ('') At least if you can't join an orchid society due to distance, you can go to a "meeting" whenever you want. Susan Paphgirl April 30th, 2005, 05:37 PM Gotcha - I'm about 2 hours from Portland, an hour almost exactly from Portsmouth. You aren't too far...Shoot for heading to Nashua for the NHOS show next Feb. In my experience, if I were to join, I'd join NHOS, they are most organized and have a lot of slipper growers, their displays and their shows have been great! I always think of you guys as being so close, but Maine is a big state! dustyatticstuff April 30th, 2005, 08:06 PM Nashua sounds good. I'll definitely keep it in mind. February can be pretty iffy with our wonderful weather, but it is worth a shot. I've never been to a show, so it would be interesting. Is it possible to get plants at good prices, or are they overpriced? I'm so used to buying plants over the internet, waiting, and hoping the plant is what I had expected. It would be fun to actually see the plant in person before you buy it. Paphgirl April 30th, 2005, 08:56 PM True, I was actually out of the country for this year's NH show, but the year before was clear, it is usually the last weekend, in hopes of it being warmer, I imagine. I haven't found plants at shows to be overly pricey compared to online. I mean, no real cheap plants, but all the show's I have been to recently have had a couple of vendors who I am familiar with online and their prices are about the same at the shows. fred May 5th, 2005, 07:26 PM I believe A&P orchids is hosting an IPA meeting or just a day of Phals. with a few talks and the open sales area twice during the dayI think It starts at nine and runs till 3:30 pm with some thing to snack on so noone has to leave for lunch. They have had these for the last few years that I know of I have never gone but I know people who have and they enjoyed themselves and walked away with some nice plants. Ray Paphgirl May 5th, 2005, 07:29 PM Any idea of a date, or where to find that info? Thanks! paphreek May 5th, 2005, 07:49 PM Susan, how far up are you? I know how you feel though, even being in Central MA I haven't joined a society because all of them meet at least an hour away from me. Frustrating! I drive a little over 2 hours to the Orchid Society of Minnesota meetings every month. I wouldn't miss them for the world! Maybe I'm crazy. Paphgirl May 5th, 2005, 08:14 PM I drive a little over 2 hours to the Orchid Society of Minnesota meetings every month. I wouldn't miss them for the world! Maybe I'm crazy. No way, maybe I am!! Part of it is the days they have meetings, in summer I can't make Saturdays (NHOS) and during the winter, driving an hour each direction after dark with traffic is, well, unappealing. Paphgirl May 8th, 2005, 12:32 PM Well, I'm still considering New Hampshire...Just waiting to see a program listed on their calendar that I can't miss! Paphgirl June 19th, 2005, 09:11 AM Last night had an opportunity to *test* drive to Bedford, NH. It is not as far as I thought! Probably only about 45 min. each way for me. I hope to try to get to next month's meeting, if my asst. can work for me that day. dustyatticstuff June 19th, 2005, 09:19 AM Thanks Heather! I'll have to look up the location on MapQuest. |
