View Full Version : haynaldianum alba selfing?

Does anyone know if Paph. haynaldianum, alba is prone to selfing? I had 3 flowers on my plant, and all three are forming pods. I have other Paphs in bloom, but I have no insects in my sunroom (except for a Ladybug that overwintered there), and I have certainly not done any pollinating.

Didn't Heather's haynaldianum album get pollinated by a ladybug???

i once pollinated a Paph by putting a ladybug into the pouch twice (once to get the pollen, once to place it....)

My haynaldianum album from Natt's also self pollinated itself on all three flowers. Where did you get yours from?

I've noticed my Lebaudyanum had self pollinated itself... so maybe haynaldianum is prone to doing this sorta stuff...

Yes, my haynaldianum was pollinated sucessfully by a ladybug. The plant won the procreation battle. The bug lost.

actually, i remember hearing from a commercial orchid grower that haynaldianum has a tendency to self pollinate. this was years ago, though.
(i'm pretty sure this really happened, too....)

Interesting, Jon. I purchased mine from Natt's, also. I bought it in bud at the Grand Rapids show in January.

What is interesting about the seed pods forming is that they each seemed to get pollinated at the same stage in the flower's development. How about you?

Funny, I scrolled down and just noticed this post. I also have one that self pollinated. There were two capsules. I sent the seeds to Troy Meyers and just got the news today that they have germinated!!! :D

They certainly do seem to have that tendancy.

My haynaldianum is also growing three pods. One was from a cross I made, the other two did it on their own. No ladybugs or other flying insects are in the greenhouse (a few cans of Attain and Preclude took care of all of them while trying to solve a mealy bug problem). I plan on removing one of the seedpods shortly.

I wonder if certain plant can create viable embryos without even using pollen.
From certain source, this happens even in animal (and supposely even in human, although very rare)?
I think there is case that the mother plant using only its genetic material and none from the pollen that are used in the cross(I believe I read this in the AOS magazin)

Yep!

Thanks for the information Zach.

Paphioland,
The one that came to mind is the birth of Jesus. Perhaps some peoples do not believe in this event. And althought I am buddhist, I think it is possible.
Supposely, in modern time, there is still some tibetan women (although very rare) give birth this way.
(of course, peoples who are used to conventional mode of thinking will reject the idea. And perhaps the only ones who really know the truth are these women themselves)

According to the article, if it did happen, the offspring would have to be female. So Jesus could not have been concieved in this manner.

In visiting with a breeder last week, he stated that Paph. haynaldianum alba is hard to use as a pod parent since it self polinates so easily. Unfortunately, it seldom produces viable seed.

Paph haynaldianum album does tend to self pollinate and sometimes there is viable seed. If I were to breed with it, it would be preferred to use it as the pollen parent. That is the common ploy used by hybridizers for cleistogamous flowers so they don't just get a selfing of the plant.

Doesn't anyone get it about Jesus? It was a miracle!

I just tried to be subtle and let others come to that conclusion.
