Hi John,
My goal is to bloom a couple hundred or more and see what I find. Sometime in the next few years I'd like to set up a dedicated indoor grow room for the roths, either that or build a greenhouse.
I remember your roth collection was looking pretty impressive a while back. So many crosses to choose from these days, I'm eager to see what you've added!
rdlsreno March 28th, 2009, 01:40 AM Excellent collection!!!:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:
Ramon:D
Bolero March 28th, 2009, 06:51 AM YOu mean it's possible to have an actual list of Roth's?
I am more than impressed. I don't know what they all are exactly but if you have that many then congratulations!
Paphy57 March 28th, 2009, 10:05 AM Quite a nice list!!
Paphraguy March 28th, 2009, 10:32 AM Excellent list! It will be Paph rothschildianum heaven when they all bloom at the same time!
orchidlover March 29th, 2009, 11:52 AM What a lovely collection!
newgrower March 29th, 2009, 12:18 PM Sound like a lot... (would not mind a few pics)
How many diffrent variants of roth are there??
Justin March 29th, 2009, 03:26 PM Hi Ken,
In the past a lot of the roths out there were from the cross of Charles E x Borneo, but in the 90s the crosses of Rex x Mont Milais (in the US) and Val x Mont Milais (in Japan) marked advances in breeding. Today plants from the second generation of these two crosses are becoming more widely available, along with backcrosses of the line-bred clones to the original jungle-collected parents.
Here are some pics of my indoor setup. i grow under metal halide lamps and fluorescents.
A few of the seedlings I've grown from flask...

And here are adult plants...

newgrower March 30th, 2009, 01:53 PM Thank you for the reply, and beautifull pictures!!
So all roth's are from one of the 3 crosses or a backcross from these??
Are some more wanted than others?
And 1 last question, are they "the same" to grow or are some of the crosses more difficult than others? (sorry for my bad english..)
take care..
Justin March 30th, 2009, 08:10 PM Hi Ken,
There are many other roths that have been used as parents over the years. These are just some of them that represent the current breeding. There are many other good crosses out there right now.
The older generation plants such as Charles E. x Borneo have more of a tendency to be slow growing and harder to get to flower. The newer crosses are faster growing and easier to bloom.
newgrower March 31st, 2009, 11:21 AM Okay, thanks alot justin!! :)
Bigpedilum July 30th, 2011, 08:58 PM Just got my first 8 paphs through mail order from Carter and Holmes. So far they're happy (after their first 4 days on our growing bench) but, I'm very happy to have found such a wealth of practical information from people who know how to care for and cultivate these beauties. Thanks for sharing.

Bolero August 1st, 2011, 02:17 AM Great list! I only have a few of them.
Can I ask, what minimum you give them? I am just curious.
Mine get down to 50F and they seem ok.

Great to hear they are doing well. What crosses did you get?
PaphRookie May 13th, 2012, 04:49 PM I hope it's okay to post in an old thread like this.
You seem to be quite an expert on roths (love the pictures of some of yours in bloom). I've ordered my very first roth just recently, it's a cross between 'Big Garden' x 'Lark' FCC/AOS. Do you know anything about any of these clones? I bought it in blooming size (my wallet cried I tell you) and against the recommendations from an experienced Paph grower since roths can apparently be hard to grow and bloom, and I'm a complete amateur AND a windowsill grower to boot.
Any little advice you can give would be highly appreciated. :D
