View Full Version : Lets Play: Guess The Cyp!

Hello All,
As an impatient cyp grower, I couldn't wait any longer. The winter has been very loooong. So I caved...I brought in a pot of cyps from cold storage to "hatch" inside. I left the pot in my cool garage for 7 days. Then brought it into my 67 degree F Hearth Room to grow. Here is the result after 10 days inside:

Ok, anyone want to guess what cyp it is?
I'll follow up with more photos as the plant blooms!

Have a great cyp season!

How exciting!:hyper: I would have to guess Cyp parviflorum?

Cyp reginae?

Very nice! We still have a ton of snow on the ground and all the plants and trees are still bare. It will be another month or so before I see any signs of plant life around here! I hope my Cyps come back this year! :fcrossed:

My guess would be Cyp pubescens.

Still snow?? I thought everyone was warming up early. My bleeding hearts are sprouting already.

UPDATE: Here are the latest photos of my "hatched" cyp. She's looking healthy and vigorous.
You folks are great cyp identifiers! Many of you said Cyp. parviflorum or Cyp. pubescens. You are half right. This mystery cyp is a hybrid with Cyp. parviflorum var. pubescens as ONE of the parents. Can you guess the other?
The plant is slightly smaller in height than a pubescens...but the flower is larger.
I'll update the photos again soon...

Yes, there is still a lot of snow on the ground and the ground freezes at night so no signs of anything green sprouting out of the ground. My Bleeding Hearts will not sprout for another 3 weeks or so. The trees are still bare and not a single leaf bud in sight!

Wow... I've had three of my Cyps indoors for about a week and a half, at a fairly consistant 63-64 degrees, and I'm seeing much less growth. Only my three-growth candidum has broken the surface, although both other plants had green on them when I peeked. I wonder what's slowing mine down...

To be fair, I had this pot in my cool garage for about 8 days before bringing it in. Plus, a few days here in Ohio were in the 60's F that week, so I set the pot outside for a little sun. It really liked that!
Then I brought it indoors. its been inside for about two weeks now.

Okay, that explains the disparity.

Here she is. An outstanding flower. At a distance she's great, but close up this slipper is spectacular. Great colour around the opening. Sepals and petals beautifully spotted.
And when you get within a few feet of this plant, you'll get a whiff of hyacinths and gardenia. She has quite a fragrance. The close-up shot should give you all a good idea of who her second parent is...she's a little hairy!

The similarities are striking Dieter! My cyp is actually Cyp Victoria...a pubescens x fasciolatum hybrid. Its is certainly very difficult to tell them apart although I have a hunch, your slipper is larger.

Interesting, I should have seen that the lip was wrong for C. Gabriela. Your plant has lip much more in line with pubescens (round, not laterally compressed and "tall" looking like kentuckiense). Very beautiful Cyp!

hey,
my "Victorias" are growing in the open garden,
therefor just 2 inches out of soil.

But as far as I remember, they look "different" from yours
there is a nice pic on Werner Frosch web site,
picture from the breeder P. Corkhill.

my plants too are from Peter.
so we must be patient.
about 3-4 week more..........

cheers

I pollinated my Victoria today...4 days after full bloom. Pollen was sticky and golden. Hopefully I applied enough to the stigma to get a seed pod...

Did you self it or cross it with another plant? A friend of mine has been using hybrids in some new crosses and he has found out that C. Gisela hybrids produce poor seeds even though that plant is very vigorous. You just never know what's gonna happen...

Hi Tom,
I selfed it. All my other cyps are still underground. I'm not sure if it will form a pod for me. This will be an interesting experiment. IF I get a pod, I plan on harvesting it green after about 6 or 7 weeks.
