I recently recieved a phrag Grande in spike. It looks healthy but the older front growth looks like it rotted and was cut off. Is this something to be worried about?

TIA, DebsC

Do the roots look good? If the roots are good I wouldn't worry. Grande's are pretty good growers.

I haven't looked at the roots yet. I just got the plant and was a little worried about unpotting it so soon. But I guess I better have a look in the morning.

Phrag. Grande has caudatum in it. Caudatum is prone to a rot. Probably that is what happened on that growth -- when the original grower saw it, he/she cut it off and probably treated it. If you don't smell anything rotten on where the cut is, I wouldn't worry about it. Do keep a watch on it, however.

I also find sometimes older, bloomed growths just die off naturally. In fact, my caudatum did that. No rot whatsoever, just yellowed, died off - put all its' energy into new growths and spikes. I'd say no problem!

umm, don't bloomed growths always die off?

Eventually, but one doesn't usually have to cut them off.

Okay, I checked the roots and they look good, even coming out the bottom of the pot. :D So I guess it's okay. Thank you all for you help.
