How many of you use natural window light for your orchids? How many of you use artificial lights?

When using artificial lights are you using regular flourescent bulbs? Can these be used?

:D

I use HID with no natural light, fluorescent lights will not not work for my plants. In the summer, they do go outdoors and in the bright sunny sunroom for about 2 months only. Hope this helps! I have also posted a pic of my grow room in the Orchid Gallery, you can check it out.

In my primary growing area, I use natural window light from a south facing bay window (the angled windows face east and west) supplemented with two 150W (soon to be 300W) "Wonderlites". The jury is still out on whether the lights help much or not.

My other growing area is also south facing and those plants will be summering outdoors, for the most part. They're the neglected misfits that don't fit the Genus "Slipper", poor ousted plants....

Oh yeah, btw, if anyone got the feeling I thought that was ENOUGH for what I grow, think again. I don't think it is, and it is a temporary situation.

Most of my paphs are in a greenhouse so I guess thats natural light.

This winter I supplemented my parvi's with artificial light. (Compact flourescent).

I use primarily fluor. lights. (I have a few larger plants next to a window.) I have the cheap (about $8 each) 4' "Home Depot" 32 watt fixtures with 5000k bulbs. I use 3 2-bulb fixtures per 4"x3" shelf. The Paphs love it! Brachys and Seedlings near the ends...most Parvi's closer to the bulbs. Coming up on a yr...time to replace bulbs soon...

Charlie' Greenhouses sells a fluorescent that is nearly as good as a HPS. The tube is coiled around a lot to give the light more surface area...and the spectrum of it makes it look like you have a HPS running. The light even looks just like a horizontal mounted HPS without the ballast. They run around $150 and work excellently. If you look in the upper right corner of my photo of Gemstone's randchild you can kinda see it.
