So I was repotting 2 maxillarias today... Didn't see the slugs until they were crawling on my arm and stomach! :Yuck: I was not expecting that. I've never had to deal with slugs. What do I do? I've isolated the plants from the rest of my collection. I had just got them as a present 2 days ago so I don't think the infestation spread, but I sprayed my collection down with fungicide/insecticide just to be safe. Is there a product out there geared toward killing slugs? Should i sprinkle salt on my plants? Help!

Unpot the plant and check for slugs and other bugs hiding in there. Then repot using fresh potting material.

Slugs love a saucer of the best beer-- they'll leave your plant alone and go for a tipple.

Good luck - this remedy will kill them!!!

Placing a penny in the pot will deter them...I haven't done this as I have never had to deal with slugs or snails, but I've read about it somewhere. Mollusks are very sensitive to copper.

Should I place in or near the pot?

Place it in the saucer.

You could also sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the base of the plant. It will cut the slugs up and they will die. You could also make a circle of it surrounding the pot so that none of them escape to other plants.

have never heard of the penny trick and i have never had any luck with beer.
if you bury a piece of copper that's a few inches deep so that the slugs/snails would have to cross it to get to the plants, the slugs are supposed to be repelled because somehow they get a shock from the copper. i have heard it works and i have heard it doesn't work.
i like a product called sluggo. it is basically iron phosphate with an attractant. it is nontoxic to people and animals and breaks down into iron and phosphorus.

Thanks for the tips! Ive been checking periodically throughout the day yesterday and today and I haven't seen any more. None in the beer saucer either. I think I may have gotten them all. For now... We'll see if they laid eggs. Ugh:mad:

If you washed the roots thoroughly then you must have washed away all the eggs if they were in there.
