Thought this plant had crown rot when I first glimpsed at it...I much prefer a spike though.
Thought I'd start one of those follow along posts, so stay tuned to watch it develop.

Paphgirl April 14th, 2005, 06:05 PM Oh GREAT! I'm so glad others are interested in progress pics. It really helps those (like me!) who don't know what to expect. Exciting news for you, and much preferred over crown rot! :joy: Congrats on the little one.
Paphraguy April 14th, 2005, 06:34 PM Wonderful! This is one hybrid I still don't have in my collection!
wolfcreekmn April 14th, 2005, 07:11 PM Hello Jon, I also think it is interesting to see progress pictures. Then you can tell how long it takes to open.
Thanks for the pictures, looking forward to seeing the flowers.

SteveT April 14th, 2005, 11:23 PM Jon, there is a big problem with that plant. You need to send it to me ASAP, I'll get it back to you in a couple months all cured.
Jon in SW Ohio April 14th, 2005, 11:41 PM lol, I'll send you some pollenia when it's blooming if you like...but I don't know how the flowers will turn out quality-wise since this will be it's first blooming.
This poor plant has been buried under the leaves of my Kolosands...and I've ignored it(not seen it in honesty) until I saw this brown area out of the corner of my eyes. Finally dug it out and moved the other plants when I thought I had a case of crown rot on my hands. It does look a little wimpy and beat up in person though, hopefully getting some light perks it back up and future growths grow better.

Park Bear April 15th, 2005, 08:54 AM Jon, you must bring that into the next meeting when it blooms

Paphraguy April 28th, 2005, 07:26 PM You're making me jealous! Lovely, btw. How many buds? Three? First time spiker?
wolfcreekmn April 28th, 2005, 08:14 PM Hi Jon your spike seems to be gorwing pretty fast . Can't wait until the flowers are open . Great job. :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:
Paphgirl April 29th, 2005, 11:30 AM Great progress, and a quick grower! :D
Park Bear April 29th, 2005, 02:05 PM Jon, will this be ready for the next meeting? :-dance:
SteveT April 29th, 2005, 02:31 PM Jon, there may still be time to save this plant if you send it to me!
Jon in SW Ohio April 30th, 2005, 02:41 AM It is growing faster than I thought it would...not sure if it will be open for the meeting or not. It should definately be open for the Columbus show this June though.
This is the first time it will have bloomed...and I've had it since it was a seedling(too long to try to remember when that was). Hopefully it is a decent one, I feel bad for neglecting it as long as I have. Looks like it will only have three flowers this time, but that beats crown rot anyday.
Sorry for not posting updates more regularly, but I will make sure to take pics at least once a week even if I don't get them posted until my camera's disc is full. I will take special care to get pics while the petals extend to show how much they grow over time. Thanks for watching.
Jon
avery April 30th, 2005, 10:18 PM Jon, no matter how good the bloom could be ... don't pollinate it this time. THe plant itself don't look healthy enough to carry seed pods ....
I saw you use transparent pot ... are those roots look abundant and healthy right now ??
Jon in SW Ohio May 1st, 2005, 05:21 AM His roots are good...there's a few visible from the pot.
But for the last while(possibly almost over a year) he has be smothered by two large kolosands. I forgot he was between them and don't think he had much light at all. I will repot him once the flowers open probably...but I wouldn't pollinate it either(but maybe remove the pollen)

SteveT May 8th, 2005, 02:44 PM Update?
Paphgirl May 8th, 2005, 02:48 PM Update?
Yeah! I think we're due! (I think Jon needs a smaller memory card! :poke: )
All kidding aside, Jon, what's the leafspan on yours? Just one growth, right?
Jon in SW Ohio May 8th, 2005, 03:09 PM Sorry for the delays...
My mom took the camera with her on her trip to Florida and it's going to be a day or two before I can get photos up.
The camera uses mini dvr cds and I usually have to take around 60 pics before I remove it so I don't waste too much money on them.
I should have updates to this plant, my besseae, and the cyp. pubescens by monday.
The leaf span is about a foot and a half on a single growth plant, with a tiny pup just starting to emerge from the base.

Paphgirl May 8th, 2005, 03:31 PM Oh great, thanks Jon! Looking forward to it. I have a 20-24" plant coming next week, so you have given me hope.
Park Bear May 9th, 2005, 08:20 AM Jon, are you bringing this to the meeting this week?

Sorry it took so long to update...amazing how much it grows in so little time. The petals are still elongating, so I'll probably post another update next week. This plant is going to the Louisville show and I hate moving these long petaled guys while they are still opening...so sorry for not bringing it to the meeting last night. Enjoy
Jon
Park Bear May 12th, 2005, 02:43 PM they are beautiful, well worth the wait
Paphraguy May 12th, 2005, 02:43 PM Absolutely, beautiful! What a show and thanks for posting! Bravo! :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

wolfcreekmn May 12th, 2005, 07:37 PM Hi Jon, looks very nice :clap2: :clap2: I like the color. How long are the petals? Another one to add to the list.
