O.K. here is the question I am moving from NY to Georgia in a few months for the promise of warmer weather and a greenhouse in the future...BUT what is the best way to move a collection of orchids (Mostly Slippers) about 200 in total (if I can stop buying them for a few months...it is harder than it sound!)? Should I wrap them as a I do for shipping? Maybe just some large plastic bins with styrofoam? I don't know...any suggestions and or stories of successes and failures? We can all learn from mistakes.. :help:

If you have greenhouse trays that fit into a box, you can do that ot Paper cones in a carboard box will work as well. Becareful of stops in hot weather! Or just give them to me :poke: :D and start anew in Ga.

Are you driving? Will you have to stop along the way?
I have no idea, but I would love to hear what others who have done it have to say, it's a great question and a quandry I've often wondered about. Hopefully some others will speak up!

Congratulations on your upcoming venture! :)

Thank you for your replies thus far... I will be driving them down myself unless some one has a better way?

I would just put them in boxes like they would sit on shelves, tape the boxes so the boxes shut so they are sturdier, putheavier boxes on the bottom, smaller lighter ones on top. Are you driving straight thru? Avoid heat and bright sun on the boxes with a sheet or something reflective(i.e. no black or navy sheets). We drive orchids all over Florida from here stacked in nice boxes for a day or two. My boss will load up his van to the brim with boxes for Redland which is a good 14-16 hour trip for him.

well dave i am sad to see you go but i would be more than happy to take them :D
honestly i said i would help you move!
the way i move them is in boxes with the sides taped up and i do not stack i dont wrap or anything as i think more handling is worse than minimal handling

Tadd's suggestions are good. You can also lay a board over the bottom box to help support a box you might be putting on top.

Just did a cross country move with my plants this past summer. I put them in large plastic Boxes that you would normally use for storage. Fill the bottom of the box with plants put the lid on it and load them in the car. I luckily have a jeep cherokee and was able to fit five of these boxes in the back. Drive for the day, take them into the hotel for the night. Mine made it with only a few problems. The climate change at the destination did more damage than the trip.
