This is on its second bloom at the moment, the photo is of the first. I haven't had a day bright enough to get the new one taken since I got back home a week ago.

Cute little species, has a slightly yeasty smell which surprised me.

That looks like a nice one Heather. Mine generally gets allot of white in the pouch as it ages. Save some pollen for me (please).

Ooh, how flattering! I've never been asked for that before! http://clicksmilies.com/s0105/liebe/love-smiley-030.gif

So, I looked in my Paph. Manual and didn't find a great explanation on how to harvest/save/send pollen for/to others. I guess I am going to need a short lesson, if you don't mind, Rick? Good trade, no? Knowledge for pollen? Works for me!

In my experience with this plant, it only darkens as it ages. Very yellow. So far this is the only one w/ the slightly deformed pouch, the other blooms have been perfect.

I think we may have an old thread on this (pollen storage). In fact I think I started it in the first week of the forum.

There are lots of ways. In general they all end up in the fridge (not frozen). Some people store in pill capsules, some folded in a sheet of alluminum foil, and sometimes folded in plain paper or wax paper. I tried storing some in taped up paper towels. They got too dried out and crumbly after a few months. I'm trying the pill capsules now. I've recieved some nice little packets that cut small square windows out of a piece of cardboard. It will look kinda like a 35mm slide, with no film in the center. A small piece of foil or waxpaper is taped on each side of the cardboard "frame" and the pollen are sandwiched between the foil or wax paper

Harvesting is straight forward. Just take a toothpick and pry the pollinia off the anther horn. Paph pollinia are fairly sticky and should stick to the toothpick fairly well, without falling off into the pouch. Phrag pollen is often less sticky and more brittle. So it is harder to deal with.

Most pollen gets sent around in regular prioity mail, in regular envelopes. Often not in winter when its freezing at both addresses. However you have it stored, just label it and tape it to some cardboard to reduce the crush factor , and take it to the post office.

Pretty easy.

Nice one ...

Regarding storing pollen, I did the same by store it in the pill capsule and put in the refrigirator in the lower part... :D

Ok, I found that thread. I like the capsule idea, so I'll try to get some this weekend. What is the best time to harvest? I think I read w/in a week or 10 days of opening? Rick, (or anyone else) do you agree?

I don't think it matters to much for pollen harvest. You can wait till the flower starts to wilt. You can also retrieve good pollen out of buds that haven't opened yet.

Pollenation has a more specific time frame. Its better to work with fresher flowers, than flowers that are about to wilt.

Oh, okay, I didn't realize that. Cool!

This little sweetie is still blooming for me at the office. This time, it is going to open a new bloom with the last still going strong, a first for me. I am not sure how long the first one will last though, and leaving town for a few days, so I won't see it again until next Monday. Took a pic now, just in case I miss it.

Fourth and fifth bloom.
