View Full Version : Question Is air conditioning good for my plants?
phragmip April 16th, 2010, 08:06 PM Summer is almost here and I like to know if the AC running will hurt my plants? I have a small collection of phrags and a few houseplants growing near a window. Should it be OK or should I move them elsewhere? Thanks!
newbie April 16th, 2010, 09:58 PM I dont know the answer but can you grow your plants outdoors in the summer?
Rocco April 16th, 2010, 11:34 PM Plants need humidity and AC kills humidity. You could move your plant outside or to another room without AC.
casey April 17th, 2010, 08:34 AM Your plants are going to need all the humidity you can give them and the AC will reduce all that humidity.

That was what I had thought so.
Paul B April 17th, 2010, 11:03 AM i dont think ac is good for plants. think about it. in the jungles where they grow are always warm and humid.
Justin April 17th, 2010, 11:51 AM Depending on where the AC vent is in the room, you can try to create a humid microclimate around the plants with humidity trays or even a humidifier. I grow indoors, and we can have the AC on in the house but still keep the humidity in the plant area at 60%+.
Also think about cracking the window open by the plants...would make the AC work harder but you might be able to find a balance that keeps both you and your plants comfortable. If I could keep the house at 80 degrees my paphs would grow faster; however, I can't afford to heat a greenhouse in the winter so have to compromise.
Chosen One April 17th, 2010, 03:06 PM Yes you can probably still grow your plants with the AC running as long as the vents are not at full direct blasts at your plants and run a humidifier at the same time.
casey April 17th, 2010, 06:02 PM If you can and have space outside of your home then moving them outside would be the best option.
Guffmeister April 17th, 2010, 06:45 PM If it's too hot and humid for you without AC, is there not a room you can put them which isn't being cooled? I know I can live happily in hot weather if I know it means my plants are going to grow well!
As others are saying, could you not put them outside?

:iagree:The plants need the humidity. It is okay if you monitor the humidity in the room.
phragmip April 17th, 2010, 08:00 PM Thank you all so much for the advice! I'm afraid of taking them outside because I don't want to burn them in the sun. I have an extra bedroom and I can move them in there and close the vents.:Thnx:

Great solution.
Paphraguy April 18th, 2010, 02:31 PM Growing your plants outside in the summer is the best option if you have the space. I grow mine outdoors in the summer where they grow so much better and faster.
