Hi,
My caudatum (not sure if it is the regular or var. sanderae) is in spike and the buds are beginning to be able to be seen deep inside the sheaths. Both of the insides of the sheaths (there are two spikes) appear to be coated in fine red hairs. Is this normal? Has anyone else ever noticed this?
It very much resembles what spider mites would look like, but I was able to touch them with my finger and they have a texture, which I don't believe spider mites have, and it is hard to tell, because I cannot get a good feel without risking damage to the buds, but they don't appear to rub off as a mite would.
I'd love to hear if anyone can confirm that the inside of P. caudatum sheaths are generally covered in fine hairs. Thanks!

one way to check for mites is to put a piece of white paper under the plant, smack the inflorescence a little (to jostle it) and then look on the paper for any specks that are moving
i don't know if the spikes are typically hairy, though

Thanks - yes, I've done the paper/cotton test. I had some mites on a few Paphs recently (they are in a different part of the house but still) and I've become pretty good at hunting them down, and can usually see if they are on the underside of leaves, that's one reason I think these are not mites, but I'd like to be certain.
The spikes aren't the ones with the fine "hairs" - they are on the inside surface of the sheath.
Maybe someone who's dissected a bloom or sheath (Olaf??) might be able to help?

I have flowered many caudatums but have never noticed the red hairs. I have some going into spike but the spikes are not out enough to see inside them. It probally isn't spider mites.

I've never noticed. I will stop at the Greenhouse this weekend and will check to see if any of Glen's caudatums are in spike and I will check for you. One of my roth primaries are in bloom and I want to get a pic and check on a few other of my plants that are in spile. I will let you know.

Honestly, they are HARD to notice! I just happened to really be inspecting the buds which are really low down....If I hadn't looked directly closely at them I'd never have noticed (oh, the mite inspection eyes helped maybe...)

Tadd! :)
Brian - I can barely get in to see them! I don't think I could possibly get a clear enough photo. Sorry!
I guess I won't worry too much about it....I imagine if it were something nasty, it would be on other areas of the plant.
