Why can't I like the cheap and inexpensive parts of our hobby like catts and phals.... My infatuation with fairrieanums is at an all time high, and I am really starting to like neofinetias.... Uuuggghhhh They are way more expensive than my fairrieanums... :) Why can't I dig a little pleuro or bulbo? What is wrong with me.... This is your chance

Well, TADD...aside from the really *obvious* things wrong with you, I think you have the same problem as me: you decided to teach high school instead of going to med school or law school; and you have yet to hit it big in Vegas or the lottery!

Just be glad you two didn't go into museum studies!
In that field, we apparently decide that a new septic system is more important (and valuable) than our employees!

So, I will now ask....
"Why can't I like the cheap and inexpensive parts of our hobby like catts and phals????"

Oh yeah, it's cause the slippers ROCK my world. Thank goodness for plant therapy!

However, I am currently wishing I lived in a more slipper-vendor populated area, at the moment! What is wrong with Massachusetts that is so right for Wisconsin and Minnesota? Hmmm???

Imagine working at a community college where my pay was less than the average for area k-12 teachers, and then being retired. It helps having no bad habits...

Personally, the more expensive the orchid is, the more I adore it. Of course that goes with clothes and cars and food, too. And just to help with your ailing wallet...have you been to New World Orchids site? I'm drooling over the orange flowers and plan/hope to get a few variegated.

I'm always complaining, why do the things I collect always collect cost so much! I guess if they were cheaper and commonly grown like roses, then I would have no interests in them. :laugh2:

Yeah Thanks Meesh have been drooling over their site for a few weeks now! I am on teacher salary here in NC, and believe me it's not much. I am sure you are right, I wish I was interested in dust bunnies!

Tadd, it could be much worse!
You could have the problem I have where the hobby is a revolving door. One month/year you are collecting slippers, the next Neofinetias, the next Pleurothallids, then species Phals, then species Catts, then Latouria section Dendrobiums, then Oxyglossum section Dendrobiums, then Nigrohirsute section Dendrobiums, then Megalclinium section Bulbos, then Macrobulbon section Bulbos, then Disas, then harlequin Phals, then Eulophias, then Maxillarias, then Psycopsis, then...(not in that order though).
And instead of completing one collection, you buy a few "keystone" ones of the type you like then move onto the next. And every show you go to, you see one and say, I used to collect these, I'll take it. Then it gets really bad when you move onto other things like other types of plants, fish, frogs and whatever else...good thing there's no lack of flooded/molded houses around here.

You will know when you are truely done for when your thinking goes from "What do I have room for?" to "What would I have to do to make room?"

I was wondering if Paph fairrieanum would grow well with bright light and a minumum temperature of 70 F at night.

Tadd I have a fairly large Dust Bunny collection. if you are interested in starting one, let me know :poke: Nice sized roth primaries aren't cheap either, I don't have the patience to grow them from young seedlings.

I too have "revolving door" collecting tendancies. I depends on what dealer I am at. I have a collection of Bulbos, Maxillaria, BL. Richard Mueller crosses, nodosa crosses. and a few other minor collections, like Dend kingianums. I am always refraining from starting something new. I also have 200 different Hosta hybrids. I have more daylillies than I know what to do with, many of them crosses that I made.

I think your position is actually quite moderate. It could be a sanderianum fetish. :poke:

I used to do high power rocketry. That literally burns cash. I was fairly low key compared to many in the hobby (at least that's what I told my wife). My highest rate of $/burn was about $40/second. And none of it grows back.

What a rush

I can empathize with everyone.....I gave up one of my dreams for all of my hobbies...becoming a pro golfer. I realized I could not have any hobbies if I became a golfer, the main one at the time was breeding fish. I collect fish, plants indoor/outdoors, smoking pipes, Cuban cigars, frogs, cockatoos, coach football, still play golf. Hobbies that I have stopped; sports memorabila, reptiles, wine, scotch/bourbon.

I still play golf and I still have dreams of playing on the senior tour, but my son has a better chance of doing this than nowadays. I don't feel bad about not accomplishing my dream of playing golf, because my number one dream was to be a dad and I have 3 kids that I would die for, so I have been blessed many times over.

I work for the USAF and I make a pretty good salary, but with all of these expensive hobbies, I need more

I've never seen a pro golfer with Rock Star length hair before.

What about frisbee golf. 8) 8)

I was going to be the first....maybe I could of had a following like John Daly :poke: .

I grew the hair after I gave up golf......We actually have a frisbee golf course at the park where I coach football, but I've never really thought about playing...I'd much rather play real golf for now. I'm just a hacker now
