:?: Having read the past posts on the Orchid Zone besseae crosses released this past year I have a question as to their chromosome count. There seem to be several crosses most involving the clone "colossol" and either "haven" "smokin" "chili pepper" or "big boy." There seemed to be some debate when it comes to the offspring of these crosses an thier chromosome count. Does anyone know if they are 2n, 3n, or 4n? They all seem to be F3 or F4 crosses far from the wild collected first besseaes, exemplifing good color, shape, and form although mine have had a pebble like exterior of the dorsal sepal which is not perfectly flat. If anyone knows the answer I would love to hear it...Thanks

While I am not aware of the ploidy of the OZ's breeding plants I would bet that Terry Root of the Orchid Zone is!!!!!! Very little gets by Terry. I suggest you go directly to the source and e-mail or call the Orchid Zone. I least that is what I woud do before I attempted to use the plants for breeding.

I didn't locate an e-mail address for you so my suggestion wan't much help. I asked another grower with knowledge of OrchidZones breeding and he said that he thought that most of the Phrag. besseae stud plants at OZ are diploids. He mentioned 'Smoken' and 'Haven' and a few others. Hope this helps until you get the real thing.
