View Full Version : My Collection
Aussie_Paph January 3rd, 2006, 12:55 AM Hi guys,
Here's my collection:
Paph laevigatum long leaves, 2 growths
P. Rothschildianum still pretty small, 20cm leaves, 2 growths! it's got a very new growth about 10cm from the main growth! with 2x 7.5cm leaves
P. phillippenense (i'm a noob speller by the way lol) 25-30cm leaves, 1 growth
P. roebellinii 20cm leaves, 1 growth
2x P. insigne pots 5-10 growths each with leaves as big as it gets for insigne
P. moqettianum seedling
P. primulinum seedling.
I think it's amazing that i can grow some of these paphs because i live just north of Sydney Australia without any heating!
A lot of winter nights here get below 10c days don't exceed 20c and this year the temp got to -2c but with no frost, although my bushhouse is probably way more protected!!!!!!!   :-dance: the paphs growth slows a lot in winter only growing 1-4 leaves but absolutely excels in summer growing more than twice this number.
If i can grow these do you think i could grow P. sanderianum? i'll give it bottom heat while young but acclimatise to the bush house (about to get a hard roof and become a cold glasshouse)
What do you guys think?
cheers,
Jack

Stephan January 3rd, 2006, 04:23 AM :welcome: to the forum Jack
Hmmm
There are at least two paphs which grow at the snow line - armeniacum and micranthum. Sure sanderianum is a tropical but it's also possible you can find a suitable micro climate which will allow it to survive where you are. I'm from coastal Brisbane and the temps here rarely get below 5. Last year we had about three nights below that mark. I have some sanderianum crosses, roths and others. They're still alive :)
Whereabouts do you hale from mate?
Cheers
Stephan
Aussie_Paph January 3rd, 2006, 05:05 AM I live in Newcastle, 2 hours north of Sydney.
Those temps i provided were from the Airport. My place is a couple degrees warmer at night and a couple degrees warmer again in my bush house. I've been looking for P. armeniacum do u know where to get one in Aus :poke: :-dance:   :jawdrop:  :innocent: :WOW: :innocent: :whoo: :Thnx: :bowing: :disappointed: ?
cheers,
Jack

I think you are lucky to live in such a climate. Your Paphs should be very happy!

P. appletonianum 1 growth but i think it's gettin another one, flowering size.

bench72 January 3rd, 2006, 04:24 PM Nice list there Jack... if it's any help, I grow many Paphs outside on a patio with a solid roof and the eastern and northern sides open... my philippinense complex plants do heaps well and the others, well... they grow...
I'm actually experimenting with a sanderianum outside... it was inside for most of the winter and I decided to put it outside for the summer to see how it goes... of course... two days after I did that, we got the 45 celsius day... seems alive... and today it is 19 celsius so it's been a roller coaster temperature! Fingers crossed it keeps going.
haven't seen many armeniacums for sale... I'd check Royale Orchids @ Peats Ridge or P&R Orchids up in Port Macquarie. They both do mail order and are on the net.
good luck with ur orchids mate and looking forward to the day when you get those flowers!
cheers
tim

Greenpaph January 4th, 2006, 04:50 PM Welcome Jack!
Nice start to your collection!
TADD January 4th, 2006, 05:20 PM Welcome and easy on the emoticons :poke:
Orchid Kitty January 4th, 2006, 05:20 PM I've got the opposite problem--I grow warm. However, I've got some phals that are growing under lights--but they are sitting on the floor of the sunroom, which is over an unheated garage, and New England winters are real cold. To give the phals extra warmth, I use a large-size electric seedling mat under the phal's humidity trays. It warms the water in the humidity trays--thus providing more humidity in addition to the warming up the area. I don't know what the mat would do for your paphs, but my phals are spiking like there's no tomorrow--even the picky species plants. The mats are about $80 US. This might be an option for you.
Aussie_Paph September 18th, 2006, 02:45 AM Just a bit of an update.
Yeah I have now made a similar setup which has the Den biggibum on it and you should see how fat the latest bulb on it is! I think I will make another one for Sanderianum. Thanks for the idea!
The cold killed the P. moquettianum which is a shame :(
The heat of late Jan-March hit the primulinum pretty hard which is why I put it in a bigger pot even though paphs like their roots snug.
But the Laevigatum's growing great with a new growth taking the total to three!
Appletonianum has two new growths taking it up to three!
The insigne's are still going well!
And these along with all the others are starting to excellerate their growth into glorious Spring!
A bit of sad but with a lot of fantabulous news!
Happy growing,
Jack
Stephan September 18th, 2006, 04:55 AM Good going Jack
It's all a learning game and sometimes plants don't survive. Spring shows are here - you may get lucky and find some cheap lessons :) .
Cheers

not quite sure how I missed this so sorry... photo requested below...
great news about how the laevigatums are growing really well... that grouping of plants are my favourite... but I'm still not one 100% sure about the differences... but time will tell as I see more flowers and plants.
