I saw this in the neighbor's yard in Houston and I had to take a picture. It's gorgeous!

I've got a variegated one, but can't stand the things. I like the look, but the smell of the plants drives me crazy. Same with the smell of tomato plants...almost makes me sick. No one else I know minds the smell, so it must just be me.

Nice Picture of a flowering datura. It is very poisonous and the plant is suspectible to mites. I like the smell but it can be overpowering a times. The smell reminds me of Phal Carribean Sunset 'Sweet Fragrance'

It is hallucinagenic, also, no?
I love these though - all the trumpet flowers I think are very beautiful! We saw many in the West Indies.

I guess I should clarify, the flowers smell wonderful at night...but the plant itself smells like a gag reflex to me (don't know how to describe it). Tomato plants also smell rancid to me, and I think it must be just me...it doesn't seem to bother anyone else when I am keeping my distance.
Supposedly the toxins from these Brugmansias and Daturas is the origin of Werewolves. The atropine is quite hallucinogenic and in medievil times "witches" would boil the leaves in beeswax and cover themelves in it and go on murderous rampages (bad trips) with the "spirit of the beast within them". I wish I could remember the book that referenced this as it was a good read. Now it seems like every year I hear about some dumb high school kid that eats the seeds to get high and ends up in critical condition in the emergency room. I guess if you want to hallucinate, find something else, if the smell doesn't drive you away the stories of kids dying should.

They grow quickly but without a greenhouse to keep them in I finally gave up on rolling them in the house and trying to overwinter them but they do put out a nice showing of flowers.
