View Full Version : Phrag longifolium
Paphraguy April 5th, 2005, 02:08 PM This plant has been in bloom nonstop for more than 2 years and still blooming with a brand new spike. This Phrag species is also the fastest growing Phrag in my collection, grows like a giant weed. The whole plant is now over 4 feet in LS. Divided this plant last summer while still in bloom and it has already produced more new growths and a new spike which is now in bloom as well. Flowers are quite large from 8-10 inches wide.

You're gonna need a lot of space for it pretty soon. :)

U kidding me? I already DO!
s'ok tho, I like the leaves!
Park Bear April 6th, 2005, 10:09 AM love it, one of my favorites
Paphraguy June 19th, 2005, 03:54 PM Here is another photo taken outdoors. This plant just refuses to stop blooming and growing. If anyone wants a fast growing Phrag species, this is definitely the one to get but they do get ENORMOUS and flowers are also very large. There are smaller varieties available which stay small and compact.

Gideon June 19th, 2005, 04:20 PM That is really nice, I will definitly be on the lookout for one.
nyorchids June 19th, 2005, 04:41 PM those flowers look huge!!!
Paphraguy June 19th, 2005, 04:43 PM The flowers in the photo are 8-10" wide and the largest one was close to 12".
TADD June 19th, 2005, 06:13 PM Wow that has been in bloom for a really long time. That is a testament to your growing ability!
RickL June 19th, 2005, 08:07 PM That's impressive Peter.
Let me know if you ever divide this plant.
Jon in SW Ohio June 19th, 2005, 08:28 PM That's why I grow longifolium v. gracile and a couple others that haven't got too monstrous. Would your plant be considered the "hinksianum" type since it's that large? I need some ginko pills when it comes to the longifolium types.
Excellent photos...do you have any of the whole plant?
Jon
Paphraguy June 19th, 2005, 08:48 PM Jon, yes mine is the hinksianum variety so you don't need your gingko pills. Here is a photo I took a year ago.

Rick, I'll let you know when I divide this plant again.
Paphgirl June 19th, 2005, 10:42 PM Hahaha! The gingko reference is spreading the forum! LOL!!!
So, Pete - you've at least two spikes on that, no? Love it - great species...LOVE the leaves (incidentally so does my kit cat! Something about longi to her is like catnip!) Soooo long and beautiful, I love it!!! Thanks for the div, Peter!
Mine had some broken leaves when it arrived so looks smaller now than it did, but two nice new growths and the two new mature growths should spike at any time; I keep watchin' for 'em!
Park Bear June 20th, 2005, 09:03 AM boy, what a nice plant to bloom so long
Ron-NY September 28th, 2005, 07:11 PM Very nice Peter!! I don't have many Phrags and none that bloom for longer than 8 months, and I thought that was a long time!
Paphraguy September 28th, 2005, 07:54 PM Thanks, Ron! If you want a Phrag that stays in bloom forever, then longifolium is the one you should get but be warned they get very big and very quickly.
Paphgirl September 28th, 2005, 07:56 PM Yeah, mine's getting huge (div of Pete's) no new blooms yet, but soon, I think/hope!
Stephan September 28th, 2005, 08:01 PM I'd settle for just one - I have a longifolium, but I think it's be a couple of years yet
Gideon September 28th, 2005, 11:36 PM Pete, what medium are you growing it in? What sort of lighting does it like, I got a division about 2 weeks ago, but it is planted in a combination of Rockwool and small stones and I want to repot it.
Paphraguy September 28th, 2005, 11:49 PM Hi Gideon!
I use bark/stone mix and I provide bright light. Thank you all for the nice comments! :D
