Hello.

I have a paph hybrid that is slowly dying.. It startet some time ago, with some of the newest shoots turning brown and dying..

Pics:

Also the new growths are dying of..

I have it in a mix of vermiculite and hydroton. Very airy and light. More dry than moist.
Could that be the reason for the brown leaves?

thanks for your help!

Kenneth

That plant has rot I'm afraid and I would move that plant far away from the rest of your other healthy plants. I would get rid of it but if you are emotionally attached to it, cut off all the rotted parts and apply cinnamon to the cut areas. Then keep the whole plant dry and do not let it get wet. Good luck!:fcrossed:

:iagree: I personally would get rid of that, since the rot is in such an advanced stage.

Replace the dying plant with a healthier better plant. Even if it does recover which I highly doubt would take years to fully recover.

I agree replace the plant.

Sorry, but there is no hope for this plant. It is time to throw it away before the infection spreads to your other plants.

I hate to say this but the plant is in very bad condition and should be discarded. Sorry about that!

How has the rot come? I have been keeping it dry for quite some time..

it could have already been infected when you first purchased it.

To avoid bacterial or fungal rot, just be sure there is plenty of air circulation.

Paphs need moisture and should not dry out completely between waterings, but you have to balace the water they need with gentle air circulation and good humidity and temperature.

Also be careful that plants don't drip water on each other and don't share common water or tools/pots/media among plants as this is how pathogens can spread.

Air circulation is very important so provide ample air flow to your plants with at least 60% humidity or higher.

First, I agree, the orchid has rot.

I hate getting rid of a plant I just paid good money for.

I tried the Cinnamon, it didn't do so hot. I tried Phasan 20. It didn't do so hot either.

Earlier this week, an Orchid expert addressed our Orchid Society. The rot topic came up. He said the best defense is to increase air circulation. I had a fan on the shelf above and below where my paphs are growing. He told me I needed a fan on EVERY shelf where the paphs were growing.

He said the Cinnamon is only good in about 40-60% of the cases. Phasan ends up peeling the protective coating off the leaf, and was creating new spots for the fungus to attack. His recommendation was Hydrogen Peroxid 3% solution right off the shelf.

Just started using that two days ago. I will let you know how it works.

I feel for you because I recently lost one to rot myself. Very happy to know that you saved your plant. Good job!

Some of the growths don't look like they're rotting yet. Don't give up.

If there are one or two growths that haven't got the rot then try and cut away the rotting piece and repot. See how you go with it.

Edit: SOrry ignore the above, looks like you've already done it. Looks great!

Well done on looking like you've brought the plant back to health. I had the same problem with two plants last year so I threw one away and tried to treat the other one. I removed it from the pot and found that it had very few good roots so i did a chopping job on it and removed all the bad stuff I could find. At this stage it looked a right sorry mess. I covered the whole of what was left with Pravado bug killer and then repotted and put to one side. Pleased to say that it is recovering with 4 new very small growths coming from the crown which I hope will continue --- but you never know!!!

so you unpotted it and trimmed off the rotted roots? Then repotted it into a smaller pot?
