I routinely make some very intersting crosses that produce very little seed. Does anyone have any experience flasking with these small amounts of seed? Can you offer me any advice or technique?

Slipperguy February 9th, 2010, 11:59 PM I had no idea some crosses made very little seeds...I wonder why! newgrower February 10th, 2010, 12:57 AM you want to flask them yourself? I don't think the process is different just because there is few seeds.. :) Paul B February 10th, 2010, 08:08 AM i also think it wouldnt be any different than ones with more seeds. phrag guy February 10th, 2010, 08:54 AM lots of phrag crosses produce very little seed sometimes,I just flask it up the same as any seed. casey February 11th, 2010, 07:18 PM Plants with little seeds or lots of seeds, still done the same way. Brian Monk March 24th, 2010, 01:08 AM The actual flasking process is the same, yes. But dealing with small amounts of seed means that losing ANY seed means losing a larger percentage of your overall potential. I have made crosses that have produced fewer than 50 seeds, total. So, yes, I am trying to find techniques where little seed is lost in the sterilization process. FTHFaceby April 4th, 2010, 01:48 PM I use a techinque suggested by Philip Seaton "Growing Orchid from seed"(I'm sure there must be other references to the method.. you carefully fold a small square of filter paper (about 3 cm by 4 cm) to form an envelope, unfold, carefully place seed in centre, refold to form a "seed tight" parcel, staple closed and then sterilise as usual, agitate carefully as the filter paper will fall apart if over stirred. Once sterilised the seed can be flushed with a few drops of sterile water or wiped straight onto the media. Works for me. Regards Paddy |
