while I wait for those phrag spikes to develop....

Pinguicula primuliflora (probably), from a fellow orchid grower earlier this year:

No fungus gnats these days so it's on a diet.

And a few Gesneriaceae:

Codonanthes supposedly grow on ant hills, or on ant nests in trees (aka "epiphytic"). These are small basket-friendly plants with flowers about 1/2" wide and succulent leaves. Codonanthe carnosa:

Codonanthe devosiana 'Paula':

I went around pollinating Aeschynanthus longicaulis, which forms bean-like pods. The genus aeschynanthus has wierd colored pollen - this one is grey-ish purple:

but rather inconspicuous flowers:

Episcia Tropical Nights, a new one from another orchid grower buddy. No flash, no color correction, but the photo is a bit bluer than reality:

and another with amazing foliage from the same person. Smithiantha Texas Freckles:

Oh, and an orchid of the terrestrial variety, Anoectochilus formosanus:

Lovely ping! I really want one of those, but I don't seem to do well w/ the shipping and transport/plant business.

Some of those others are very interesting. The Smithiantha is fuzzy wuzzy!!
Excellent photos also!

thanks!

I've been corrected - apparently the ping is probably a mexican one, not primulifolia. That would explain a few things....

Very cool non-orchids and jewel orchid! I have always meant to broaden my Gesneriad species collection, just nowhere nearby that sells them. Do you have any other photos of that Aeschynanthus, it's a beauty.

hi Jon - here's a link to some Aeschy photos showing the "life cycle". Apparently what I have is sometimes known as the Kew clone - thicker leaves and better markings than the standard form.

We also have no local source for them - other than the local chapter of the gesneriad society, which has a sale once a year (only been once, though). I grow a lot of the species from seed from the Gesneriad Society seed fund - many bloom in 6 months so it's nice and fast. The others mostly comes through trades - I do a LOT of gesneriad trading because they propagate like mad, from seeds, cuttings, rhizomes, leaves, parts of leaves.... It's a wonder they haven't taken over in some parts of the world.
