Okay....
I've been trying to break up PDF files (from Lien, thanks!) of Wildcatt awards data to include in my database but have yet to succeed. I can split them out page by page, one at a time, but they are so small I cannot read them, and since they are just snapshots of the data, I cannot increase the font. It isn't working, and for just slippers, it isn't worth me purchasing Wildcatt to use on my PC at work.

I am interested in including in my database the award info for each awarded species or hybrid that I own, but I recognize that is a lot of work, so....if anyone is interested in helping the cause let me know and maybe we can work something out. I'm at the point where I wouldn't mind paying for this at all. Perhaps we could work out a fair deal.

Let me know if you are interested! Thanks!

Hey, have you tried the text select tool in Acrobat Reader 7.0? That should let you copy and paste the info.

Yeah! I've tried on a Mac. w/ a downloaded version of 7.0 and a PC w/ a full new version. Same results! I can select it, and copy it, but it comes out like three sizes smaller in font, which I cannot seem to change, and I can only do one page at a time, not the whole species!

Am I missing something here? If I'm an idiot, I'm happy to be one if it solves the problem, it's making me nuts!! NUTS!
I'd really rather just be able to make pdfs for each awarded species/hybrid.

How about pasting it into Word or something similar, copying that, and then into the database?
Could you give me an example of one species you want all the data for?

Yes - tomorrow, I will copy in an example of what I seem to be able to accomplish, and an example of what I would rather accomplish. Stay tuned, and thanks for the interest!

That's what I do -- copy and paste text into Word. But I've not tried it with Wildcatt data. If you have AppleWords, it should also work there.

Heather,

Maybe I do not understand your question/problem correctly, but what I sometimes find very useful is the following:
When I have a pdf-file from which I would like to copy (quite) some text I save to document a text. And from a text-file it is very easy reading, cutting and pasting.
I must confess I have no experience with the Mac-version of Adobe Reader, but my Windows version has a standard option in the file menu, called "Save as text...".

My two cents.

Rob,
Yes, that does work, saving as text, however I'm still having problems. Say I do a search in the pdf document for "besseae" and then select all the awarded besseae species, copy, and save as text. Every time I select text, it doesn't seem to recognize just the selection and will only let me save the whole document - all 288 pages - as text, not just my besseae selection. If I save the whole document as text, then I lose the search capacity. It seems like there is no easy way of breaking up a large document into smaller chunks. Or, at least I haven't discovered it yet!

Why? One can still search in a file in plain text format.

I don't seem to have an option of what plain text program to use, so it automatically puts it into Textedit (which is a Mac program) in which I cannot search.

I will try this at work w/ the professional version on the pc (I don't have the prof. version for Macintosh yet.) The one on my Mac (downloaded 7) won't let me change the document at all.

Hrm well you could make a copy of the original pdf and then delete all the pages that don't have a Phrag besseae award on them. After that, you can use the text touch-up tool to delete all the entries that aren't Phrag besseae. That would leave you with a pdf of just the pages that have pertinent entries. This is only really useful if you want pdfs of each and have the full version of acrobat or another pdf editor.

Sigh....
yeah, it just doesn't seem like it should be that difficult, does it? I mean, doing that for each species is a little tedious....

Thanks for all the suggestions though - if anything new comes to mind, let me know!

New idea!
How about pasting the data into excel? it seems to format the data alright...
