bhams February 27th, 2009, 07:24 AM Hi all , don't quiet known if this is the section to post this , but today i said goodbye to my paph and phrag collection of 25 odd years . After two years of trying to addapt them to my new conditions -things weren't right . they were growing slowly but not flowering much -As a lot of them were speice plants I 'd sort after for many years - i came to the realization that keeping them here was selfish - and that was not my primary reason for starting my collection in the beginning -it was to help preserve some of the plants -I did think of selling them - but how do you sell something that doesn't have a price to you.
you bought it years ago & repotted it on & on so the price you paid for it is really ilrevelevent . in the end I rang a member of my paph group here and asked him if he had room to take them all -so they stayed together as a group . today he picked them up -
It was really sad to see a empty shadehouse when he left but I known it will be best for my plants . -- I would like to say thankyou to Peter & all his helpers & to all the people whom have helped me over the years on this web page -
Billie

Paul B February 27th, 2009, 10:30 AM Sorry to hear that! at least you found them a good home.
skipper February 27th, 2009, 11:07 AM Very sorry and sad to hear that.
orchidlover February 27th, 2009, 12:54 PM That is a heartbreaking story and must have been awful to part with them after so long!:( I had to give most of my plants away before we moved so I know that feeling. I hope you would still visit us and say hi!
Justin February 27th, 2009, 01:51 PM That's tough. are you going to replace them with orchids from different genera?
dragonfly22 February 27th, 2009, 06:07 PM I hope you can give them another try someday but you did what was best for them!
Slipperguy February 28th, 2009, 12:11 AM Thats too bad...what are you planning to grow?
bhams February 28th, 2009, 12:35 AM thanks for your support -what seems to grow well here are the specieosum and other hard leaf australian genera - I knew taking my paphs and phrags out of a glasshouse -into a shadehouse would be hard . but the climatic changes are from -4 C to 41C here in summer just too hard and i didn't want them all to die -my glasshouse had been up for years so moving it wasn't really an option -and if any of you have moved a glasshouse you'd know taking the glass pains 300 miles just wouldn't work . well i guess I'll work on finding the different types of speiceosums- please keep posting those great photos you all have . again thanks Billie
rdlsreno February 28th, 2009, 12:49 AM Sorry to hear that.:(

Tom Velardi February 28th, 2009, 04:44 AM Hey Billie,
Well, that's a bummer, but I'm sure that you'll find something to grow. Personally, I love Australian native plants...lots of interesting variety. About climate change, I have a similar problem here with Cypripediums. Historically it was just barely cold enough to grow a few species, but with the "winters" being what they are these days, I wonder if in another few years it will be possible to keep them going. Time will tell.
Paphraguy February 28th, 2009, 09:47 AM Hi Billie,
You're most welcome but I was sad when I read your post. When I lived in south Florida where it is constantly hot and humid all my Paphs and Phrags grew and thrived beautifully. Here in Maine the summers are even hotter and they all go outside to enjoy the heat and they actually grow even more faster.
Anyway, I wish you all the best in your next project. Hope you stick around!
Tom S February 28th, 2009, 04:23 PM Sorry to hear that! That must have been a tough decision!
Paphy57 February 28th, 2009, 07:53 PM That really is sad to hear. I am glad that you were able to realize what was best for the plants. As Peter said, I truly do hope that you still hang around! I would certainly like to see some native Australian orchids!
keya March 3rd, 2009, 06:37 AM I'm sorry for you.
