I was told that this plant does not like to be kept wet all the time. All the long petalled Phrag species should NOT be kept wet. They like to stay on the drier side. They also require very bright light and plenty of air circulation. Be careful, they are prone to bacterial rot in the summer if ample air flow is not provided! Park Bear March 2nd, 2005, 11:20 AM Thanks, I keep mine outside in the summer from around May to October. I keep them now in my fishroom/greenhouse in my basement. I breed fish and I have around 200 tanks, so this complements the humidity requirement for the orchids. I keep fans going and I usually have a 15 degree temp swing each night. What artificial lighting are using in your basement greenhouse? If you're using fluorescents with no natural light, then I'm afraid it is not adequate for caudatums to bloom to their full potential. RickL April 1st, 2005, 10:00 AM Great looking plant Peter, and nice dark pouch color. Paphraguy April 1st, 2005, 10:04 AM Thanks, Rick! Yes the pouches were dark which I really like about this cross. They do lighten up a little as they age. RickL April 2nd, 2005, 10:33 AM I just saw a couple of these at the Huntsville show. These are beautiful monster Caudatum flowers. Paphraguy April 5th, 2005, 10:53 PM I just saw a couple of these at the Huntsville show. These are beautiful monster Caudatum flowers. Yep, some of these mature caudatums do get quite big with large flowers and my caudatum hybrid like my Grande has even larger monster flowers! I have a 1000w HPS and 1000w MH setup in my basement. Paphraguy April 6th, 2005, 02:34 PM sorry Peter I just read this. I have a 1000w HPS and 1000w MH setup in my basement. With that light system, your caudatum should have no problem growing and blooming! :) Park Bear April 7th, 2005, 07:56 AM I was able to get both very cheap from an auction site www.stealitback.com I had to do a little clean up and add new electrical wiring. The site usually has a lot of lights, but the prices have gone up the past 3 years. wolfcreekmn April 7th, 2005, 10:54 AM Hi Peter, How big is the plant in the picture you post here LS and pot size? Because the plant doesn't look real big. I love the flowers . Eric Paphraguy April 7th, 2005, 11:04 AM Hi Peter, How big is the plant in the picture you post here LS and pot size? Because the plant doesn't look real big. I love the flowers . Eric Hi, Eric, the plant is now a little larger with more new growths, a LS of about 21" in a 6" pot but I have seen larger ones, more matured caudatums and they were quite impressive! couscous74 July 19th, 2005, 09:36 AM Wow, what a great shot. great background, great lighting. :clap2: Paphraguy July 19th, 2005, 09:42 AM Thanks, Marcus! I think it is my favorite Phrag species and the poster (different background) is available in the Gift Shop. :D Click here (http://www.cafepress.com/slipperorchid.25476564) Paphraguy November 30th, 2005, 04:16 PM The plant is beginning to spike again! :-dance: Paphgirl November 30th, 2005, 05:00 PM Pete, I realize that these will spike under the right conditions, but is this generally the season for caudatums to start going into action, or are you off season, do you think? A couple of growths on mine are looking decidely suspicious and I've been keeping an eye one them lately, so when I saw your post I smiled a little, in hope. Gideon December 1st, 2005, 01:38 AM Excellent! Ya, okay, apparently it's caudatum season in Northern New England at least. Checked on my two suspicious growths again this morning and they've each got a sheath emerging. :-dance: Paphraguy December 1st, 2005, 07:36 AM It is definitely slipper flowering season here in New England or at least in my house! I have quite a few slippers in bud right now and I also found my delenatii in bud also. Slipperguy June 18th, 2006, 11:32 AM Peter-I dont see your photos...how come? thnx. Paphraguy June 18th, 2006, 12:41 PM Hi Guy, Sorry but those pictures are not viewable because I changed servers and all the older pictures were on the older servers. I'll try and find those old photos and post them here for you. In the meantime, here is a more recent post (http://www.slipperorchidforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4051&highlight=caudatum) with photos of the plant in bloom with only one flower (2 buds died) which was a big disappointment. The first time the plant bloomed for me had 2 spikes and 5 flowers and it was spectacular! |
