View Full Version : Vote: Where to use Paph Little by Little pollen
paphreek November 15th, 2005, 06:27 PM Here's the follow up poll. This one may have more influence on me as I can pick at least 4 options with the amount of pollen available. Same disclaimers apply as in other poll. Again, if you like, give reasons for your vote.

TADD November 15th, 2005, 07:43 PM Definitely fairrieanum :) And I really want a seedling :poke:
dustyatticstuff November 15th, 2005, 09:40 PM I voted for Chocolate Eagle, having a vested interest, as I am its custodian. I also think the cross could make an interesting mix of colors.
My other favorites are: Exul x Tyke, Bell Ringer Brocade, and barbigerum x charlesworthii.
There could be some very exciting breeding coming out of this.
Thanks again, Ross!
Paphgirl November 16th, 2005, 01:02 AM Oh goody! Mine's winning!
So ROSS - how's the SNOW????

We missed the main strip of snow. We only got a couple of inches, but the temp this morning is 19 F and falling with 30-40 mph winds out of the NW. Should I bring my orchids in, yet? :poke:
paphreek November 18th, 2005, 12:33 AM Just a bump. Voting continues through Sunday afternoon. Please vote even if you don't have any comments to post.
Thanks

I'm revisiting my Chocolate Eagle, as I've learned that the blooms can exceed 5" in size. Perhaps not the best candidate for a complex mini, even though the stem is a nice length.
TADD November 18th, 2005, 12:02 PM Aaaawwww Man I can't stuff the ballot box! :poke: Vote early vote often!

That's how we vote here in South Florida :-dance:
paphreek November 21st, 2005, 12:12 PM Thanks to those of you who voted. I will most likely try the barbigerum x charlesworthii for the tall stem and white dorsal. It's interesting that this cross will be going back onto two of the grandparents of Little by Little. That has me curious as to the results.
The other cross that I'm going to do right away is with the exul x Tyke. Fairrieanum is a consideration, also, but not until I see the fairrieanum blooms.
paphreek November 25th, 2005, 07:49 PM I just attempted two of the crosses voted on:
The first, ([barbigerum x charlesworthii] x Little by Little), was the number one vote getter. The other one, ([exul x Tyke] x Little by Little), was number three, but first on my list. (It's good to be the king). I've got number two on hold, waiting for one of my fairrieanums to open. Time will tell whether they produce seed.
paphreek May 7th, 2006, 07:56 PM Just a little update on the two crosses that I did using Paph Little by Little. Here's a picture of the maturing pod of the top vote getter: (barbigerum x charlesworthii) x Little by Little.

Here's the other cross that took. It was third in the voting: (exul x Tyke) x Little by Little.

Both pods look good. Of course time will tell. I've had nice fat pods that have ended up many embryos in the seeds and others that have had few or none.
dwclapp May 8th, 2006, 12:21 AM Okay... I'll put my order in now for a couple of each when they finally come out of flask. That makes me first in line... right?

Stephan May 8th, 2006, 04:33 AM I hope you get good viable seed in both pods and that I get to see the flowering results :) I also wish I could order some of the result without going through umpteen miles of paperwork.
Cheers
Stephan
TADD May 8th, 2006, 04:40 PM Congrats Ross! Hope it continues to work!
phragfan May 8th, 2006, 07:57 PM I'm curious. Any pod that "took" that I've seen still has the flower, albeit mostly dried up, but still attached. When the flower drops off naturally, I've seen that to mean the pod is not developing. Did you remove the flowers, or did they fall off?
paphreek May 8th, 2006, 08:32 PM I think that the flowers on both pods slowly shriveled and eventually fell off or were knocked off, I'm not sure. I've had successful germination of seed from pods where the flower fell off after a period of time. By the time the flower fell off, the pod was already starting to swell up. Generally when the pollination is a failure, not only does the flower fall off, but the stem and pod immediately begin to dry out and die. I've also had several unsuccessful complex crosses where the flower remained attached, causing me to think that the pollination was successful only to have the stem turn brown and die after only a month or two.
As long as a pod remains fat and green, I leave it on to maturity.
I would like to hear more comments from others experiences. :)

I wish it were so, also. :( I once looked at the paperwork for importing hybrids into the US and found it rather confusing to say the least. Didn't you say that you had a more liberal flask importation rule in Australia?

I generally order a minimum of 5 flasks of any miniature cross and 10 on some. What I end up with can vary.
paphreek November 5th, 2006, 10:06 AM Just thought I'd add an update: Both capsules produced seed. One was sent to the lab a couple of weeks ago and I am awaiting the viability report. The other will be sent tomorrow.
Slipperguy November 5th, 2006, 10:26 AM :woohoo: :congrat:
bench72 November 5th, 2006, 05:35 PM Wow, that seemed like it took hardly any time... four months right? is that green pod or mature pods?
Nynaeve November 5th, 2006, 06:40 PM Very nice! Yes it seems like it went quickly, no?
Jason Fischer November 6th, 2006, 03:18 PM Put me down for 1 flask of each! That's what I call innovative breeding!
paphreek November 12th, 2006, 06:41 PM Wow, that seemed like it took hardly any time... four months right? is that green pod or mature pods?
No, they took much longer than four months. I don't have my pollination records here with me at my son's place in Orlando, but I believe that they were pollinated in late November or December of 2005.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jason. As you can see from the vote, I had forum member's help in selecting the crosses.:)
