View Full Version : Some littlefrog paphs
Littlefrog April 1st, 2005, 04:47 PM Ok, let's see if this works...
This is:
Gemstone Randschild x lowii

Paphraguy April 1st, 2005, 04:50 PM That is a very pretty lowii hybrid. Thanks for posting!
Littlefrog April 1st, 2005, 04:52 PM A couple sukhakulii: The first picture was one of the best I had seen in a long time. Till the second one bloomed. Picture doesn't do the second one justice. Petals are substantially wider than the first, and the flower is at least as wide if not a little bigger (it isn't quite fully open yet).

Run, don't walk, to the wizard of OZ and see if he still has some of this batch. Terry is doing some awesome things with line bred sukhakulii
Paphgirl April 1st, 2005, 04:55 PM Gorgeous Paphs you have there! I love the second sukhakulii! One I don't yet have....
Littlefrog April 1st, 2005, 04:55 PM Ok, they don't all turn out well. This is one I made a long time ago that is finally blooming. The picture actually enhances this flower a lot...
Somebody needs to come up with a suitable name for it. I can't think of a good one.

Paphraguy April 1st, 2005, 04:56 PM Nice sukhakulii! How big are your flowers?
Littlefrog April 1st, 2005, 04:57 PM Cute little species. I've had clones of this that were consistently bifloral, but none of this batch of a dozen or so seems to have that desirable feature...

Littlefrog April 1st, 2005, 05:02 PM Ok, this is the last one for a while. Here is a substantial portion of one flask of wardii that is blooming out at the same time (last year). The flask came from Fox Valley, I think.

Littlefrog April 1st, 2005, 05:06 PM Nice sukhakulii! How big are your flowers?
Umm... Big. really big. Haven't measured them, but I've seen a lot of sukhakullii (saw a half dozen at a show last week), and these are easily 25% bigger than any of those.
Anyway, this just goes to show what you can do if you line breed them enough. Terry Root has gone through several generations of these, picking out his best to cross together. I'd really like to see what his best ones look like...
Paphgirl April 1st, 2005, 05:28 PM Run, don't walk, to the wizard of OZ and see if he still has some of this batch. Terry is doing some awesome things with line bred sukhakulii
Yes, so how does one do that when he doesn't sell retail anymore? I've often wondered about that.
I like your hennisianum also, adorable! Your fowlei x parishii is a cute little guy, though, I'm not sure I'd want one. ;) Interesting though...inherited the parishii dorsal shape, which I always like.

Yeah, OZ is busy, but I'd far rather Terry was making crosses than dealing with an infinite number of retail customers. Retail is hard work.
There was a guy selling OZ stock under the business name of "Orchid Magic", but I think he has moved on to other things. However, a lot of resellers (including me) order paphs from OZ wholesale. So contact your favorite paph reseller, ask if there is an OZ order going in sometime soon, and put in a specific request. It would help to have some sort of friendly relationship with the vendor, of course. It helps if they know your name...
Before I was a vendor (not too terribly long ago...), I was in a group of four or five paph-rats from my orchid society. Between us, we would always order enough to exceed the wholesale minimums. It was dangerous, actually. Somebody had to be in charge of figuring out who wants what, placing the order and receiving the plants, and distributing them after they arrive. I don't think Terry cares who he sells to, but it has to be in lots that are worth his time. This strategy works for any wholesale order, actually. We would order from H&R, I.M. Komoda (miltoniopsis), etc. Always get a better price when you buy a lot.
I have a dozen or so hennisianums, so I might be able to part with one or two. But the sukhakulii I am keeping... *grin*. Only got four, and sold one by mistake (in retrospect).
Paphgirl April 1st, 2005, 06:32 PM Thanks for the info, Rob. Pete and I have been doing the "combine the order" thing for a while now (see warsce. in Phrag. gallery)....but not on a wholesale level...*yet* (!!) :poke:
Good to think about broadening that though, since we've got this little community going now. :D
Littlefrog April 4th, 2005, 02:54 PM Not often seen species. It was used in breeding in the latter part of the 19th century, but not much since then.
It has qualities only a paph lover could love, I guess.

Littlefrog April 4th, 2005, 02:58 PM Some of this grex (from OZ) turn out pure alba, some not. Here is a picture of both kinds.
Sequential bloomers. Cute as heck. The alba is a little out of focus, I've taken at least six pictures, but evidently it is too cute for my camera to handle.

Park Bear April 5th, 2005, 10:43 AM all of your plants are very nice and look very healthy
