Paphgirl February 3rd, 2006, 06:39 AM I think so, Susan. fred February 9th, 2006, 10:09 AM Hi Heather I'm pretty sure I'm sending my Michael Koopowitz and one other to the show with Joanna Eckstrom under Central New England. We have a show meeting this Sat that she plans on attending and offered to take the plant home with her. Then On Sun I may go up to bring it home. I had wanted to have it judged last Sat. but somthing came up and I wasn't able to . This is a good chance to get it judged but in honesty I doubt it will get anything. After reading some awards for it I don't stand a chance. Will you be there breaking down on Sunday? Paphgirl February 9th, 2006, 12:21 PM Hi Ray, I will be there Sunday to break down, yes. I look forward to seeing your MK in person! I'm not sure I'm going to make it to the preview party as I am clerking all day Friday, but will be there most of the rest of the weekend. Just sent my registration in this morning, hoping to show 12 plants (if they all open as I hope! A few of them better hurry it up!) fred February 9th, 2006, 12:43 PM Hi Heather , 12 plants that's a good amt. Hope to see you on Sun. if not will you be taking pictures/ Ray Well, four of those twelve (at least) aren't quite open yet, so again, say a little "hurry up you!" for my plants! I have one I hope might get pulled but it isn't open yet, and so I think it is doubtful at this point, unless some miracle happens, but we'll see. I don't think I had trouble with the registration, but the registrar would be able to better say. Will definitely take photos, of course! Hope to see you, and all the other NE'ers there. (Sounds like we may get a N'oreaster this weekend, hope it gets it out of its' system and next week is beautiful weather!!) fred February 14th, 2006, 10:09 PM Hi Heather Getting close to show time you must be getting excited. I just want to wish you luck hope you do real well. Paphgirl February 15th, 2006, 07:22 AM Thanks Ray! Yep, excited but a little nervous as I am not really sure what to expect. Will water and get the plants together today. All twelve are not going as anticipated. Unfortunately, it looks as though the caudatum just isn't going to make the trip. Yesterday, I had two blooms on Phrags that were intended to go, drop, of course. Just no accounting for timing, I guess! Oh well. Anyone doing Amherst next weekend? fred February 15th, 2006, 07:39 AM I'm sure you will do fine, Phrags are so hard to do for a show. unless they open a few days before . too unpredictable.I'm hoping the flowers on My Koop will still be at thier best because I would think they may be on the back end of thier bloom be just my luch they start to shrivel. I guess that's what makes doing a show fun. At least the weather will coperate . See You , Ray Paphgirl February 15th, 2006, 08:41 AM I'm sure you will do fine, Phrags are so hard to do for a show. unless they open a few days before . too unpredictable.I'm hoping the flowers on My Koop will still be at thier best because I would think they may be on the back end of thier bloom be just my luch they start to shrivel. I guess that's what makes doing a show fun. At least the weather will coperate . See You , Ray Yes...two of my Paphs may be close to their "back end" too. I am really looking forward to seeing your MK in person! I'm disappointed though because one more week and I think I'd have a fair amount more going. I guess March might be more my month. Still, I'm looking forward to the show, should be exciting! Paphgirl February 16th, 2006, 06:37 PM Well, it looks as though it will be a fine show. I dropped my plants off just in time this afternoon - despite a registration time of noon-7, they were itching to get the NHOS display done asap and I was obviously late at 2pm. I think mine were the only multis in our display, and the only Hanne Popow, but there were a couple besseaes other than mine (yellow and red) and a very nice specimen sized Eric Young (not surprising, it won a grower's commendation at the January meeting.) They found a particularly nice spot for my Eva Weigner. It was a bit of a zoo, and I tried to sneak a peek around for a certain Michael Koopowitz, and some of Stan's plants, but either they weren't there yet or weren't unpacked yet. So...Stan and Ray, you two will have to stay tuned until tomorrow. I hope I get on one of the slipper clerking teams - since that's really what I know about! Now I'm excited! fred February 16th, 2006, 07:08 PM Thanks for the news Heather What time do you have to show up to clerk? My plants are in Central new England. BUt as a judge or clerk you are not supposed to know who's display is who's. That's a rule that I don't understand because if you attend enough shows you can tell the vendors displays at least. I'll be waiting to hear how it goes Have Fun Ray dustyatticstuff February 16th, 2006, 07:19 PM Hi, I'm looking forward to the show. I'll be there Sunday and can't wait to see everyone's plants. Hope they get awards! Heather, what exactly do you have to do when you clerk for a show??? Paphgirl February 16th, 2006, 07:45 PM Heather, what exactly do you have to do when you clerk for a show??? Um...I'll tell you tomorrow night! :D (See you Sunday!!) likespaphs February 17th, 2006, 11:12 AM i've clerked for a few shows. the job i had was to run ahead and find the plants so that when the judges got there, they didn't have to waste time lookin' fer 'em.... other people recorded decisions (ribbon winners). i think that person also placed the ribbons. Paphgirl February 17th, 2006, 03:07 PM Hi, Just got home. I was actually head clerk (LOL!) for my team. We got the Vandas and Cymbidiums. Was pretty interesting. I would say I would have rather'd been on the slipper team, however, they were a mess! Lots and lots of plants and I think for my first time recording, it was actually a blessing that I got a couple of smaller alliances. So, that said - I've got some information for Ray and Stan. :) Don't quote me on these - I'll try to find out more info tomorrow but after we finished with our category, we got co-opted to judge the windowsill/light growers for Paphs and Phrags. Ray - your Michael Koopowitz got (I think) a second ribbon for primary hybrid and a first for windowsill/lights. I think my Eva Weigner (first) beat you for primary hybrid, but you beat my St. Swithin (second) for windowsill/lights. My Eva did the best of all the plants I brought with two ribbons (I think it was the nicest of the Paphs I brought up but the St. was getting some attention too.) There was a nice rothschildianum that got first for Paph. species. Not sure who's it was. It was nice but no FCC for sure (the petals were not terribly outstretched and were quite wide for a roth. I'll get a pic in the a.m.) I heard talk about your Lawless Sandguard (nice plant btw) but I didn't see any ribbons - that said, I think they hadn't finished placing the ribbons when I left - so it may have gotten something, but just not had the ribbon placed on it yet. (This was the case w/ a couple of my Phrags also, I think my Hanne Popow got a third for windowsill/lights and the dalessandroi a first.) The Paph group ran out of time and I think they got a little discombobulated at the end! Stan - I think your White Castle x fairreanum got second (not sure what class that was for.) There was another ribbon as well, but I couldn't tell if it was for the fowliei or for a non-slipper in the front of the basket. Nothing on the Deception II or Ho Chi Minh, sorry! There were a couple other Ho Chi Minhs there, and all were comparable to yours. I don't have any best in show or trophy info that would be useful to anyone at this point so I'll post again tomorrow. So, I guess that's about it for now. I apparently had a plant disaster after I left the house this morning, which G begrudgingly had to deal with, so I think I'd best go check into that! fred February 17th, 2006, 06:00 PM Hi Heather Thanks so much for the info . Haven't heard anything so was glad to hear what you had to say. You Know they had a time of it with the slippers at the Cape and Islands also they are going to have to rethink the way they handle thet section. Glad you had a good time by the sounds of it Piper February 24th, 2006, 12:55 PM Hi all, Best-in-Show last weekened went to Lisa Parker (TSOS), for her Clowesia Jumbo Grace. She manages the Dartmouth College greenhouse (this was a plant in their collection), and said it is a rare plant and tricky to grow - so she was thrilled with the award. The plant is an ugly one with bald bulbs, but the flowers were beautiful! Julie |
