I just repotted about 15 plants over the past couple of days. This is a nice problem to have, but it seems I have grossly underestimated A) the size pots I will need, and B) the amount of prime agra I will need. BAH! Looks like I will be placing another order at first rays, as I am out of prime agra and still have another batch of plants coming.

Each and every plant that I unwrapped had such a monster root system that I had to spend hours untangling the roots to remove the old medium, etc. Does anyone out there just leave the roots clumped and shove the plant into a bigger pot? I got tired of accidentally breaking off good roots. BAH! My husband didn't help by cheerfully taunting me with choruses of "another one bites the dust." :embarass:

BAH!!!!!

When I repot my plants, if the roots looks nice full and healthy looking, I try my best not to disturb the roots as much as possible. If I do see broken, dead roots, then I do trim the old dead roots and remove the old material inbewteen the roots.

Awww, :therethere: Teresa....you poor thing.

Having just repotted a whole slew, I know what you're saying though. Inevitably I have either too much or too little mix soaked, or prepared.

Regarding the roots, if you're repotting in S/H, I think you have to do the untangling in order to be sure you've removed all the organic material/old mix. In a conventional mix, I tend to do what Pete does, unless it's a plant that has been repotted several times without a thorough root inspection.

Only if you don't have a compost heap to toss them into....

Teresa

Your husband cracks me up.

I agree you can spend allot of time knocking old media out of roots, and you will loose a few (if you are especially brutal). But the plants will appreciate the new mix.

i use a stream of running water, it makes it go easier and faster.

For what it's worth, I will rinse & try to untangle roots as best I can. I try to rinse as much old growing media as possible, without disturbing new, active roots. I also will snip off the dead roots, before potting into a new medium. So far... so good.

But I'm a relative newbee, so I hope our more experienced friends will reply!!!

Good Growing, Teresa. Enjoy!!!

Best,
