View Full Version : Phrag. klotzscheanum x warscewiczianum
wolfcreekmn March 2nd, 2005, 11:05 AM Hello,
I have been growing orchids for 4 years. This is the only Phrag. that I have, I was wondering if any one has heard of this cross. This is one that Jason Fischer crossed. I bought it last year as a seedling he told me it should bloom this summer can't wait to see what it will look like. None of them have bloomed yet from this batch.

WOW! That should be a beautiful primary hybrid! I love both the parent species and it should be spectacular in bloom! Do post pics when it blooms for you this summer. This hybrid requires very bright light to bloom since both the parents are very high light loving plants.
Paphgirl March 2nd, 2005, 11:54 AM Yes, that sounds like a very nice combination. I have always read that klotzscheanum likes very pure water, but I have to say I have not had any problems just watering with my regular tap water. Has anyone else noticed their's being especially particular?

My klotz loves tap water and it is growing beautifully!
wolfcreekmn March 2nd, 2005, 07:25 PM Thanks for the info about the very bright light. When it blooms I will post pictures. I cant wait to see it myself. I use RO water with Green Jungle and also add a little tap water.
wolfcreekmn March 18th, 2005, 12:29 PM Hello, I thought I would add a picture of this seedling so you could see how big it has got in 1 year. I also was wondering when I repot it what size pot should I use ? It is in a 3 1/2 inch pot now. :-dance:

Paphgirl March 18th, 2005, 12:36 PM WOW!!! That's quite a beast! Both warsce and klotz are pretty slow growers, so that's quite something! Very nice!
I always pot based on roots - just enough space for roots to fit comfortably.
Paphraguy March 18th, 2005, 12:58 PM Definitely a WOW! I love the foliage and it's a beautiful healthy looking plant. Good job!
wolfcreekmn March 20th, 2005, 03:22 PM Hello, I was wondering about putting this into semi hydro, because it seems to take a lot of water. I was wondering what every one else thought ? I dont want to lose it because of a dumb mistake by me . Any ideas ?
Thanks
Eric
Anonymous March 20th, 2005, 04:58 PM Well, I know almonst nothing about SH...but the way it's growing I wouldn't change a thing! ...except for fresh mix and a bigger pot when it needs it...
Paphraguy March 20th, 2005, 05:10 PM I also agree with Terp!
Paphgirl March 20th, 2005, 05:36 PM I was also thinking the same thing - seems it likes how you've been treating it!
wolfcreekmn March 23rd, 2005, 09:40 AM Hello everyone, I have another question? Yesterday when I was watering this one, I looked in the center and it looked like it has 2 leaves coming and what might be a spike starting  . What I was wondering is if it is a spike its not going to fit in my 90 gal. tank so should I take it out now or wait until the spike will not fit in there any more? If I take it out it will go in my east window with my other orchids. The only thing is it wont get 17 hours of light like it is now , and the humidity will be around 40% to 50% instead of 55% to 70%.
Please give me some help? I don't want to loose this spike if it is. This will be the first one to bloom out of this bunch.
Thanks
Eric
Paphraguy March 23rd, 2005, 09:50 AM It sure sounds like a sheath is emerging. :joy: Why move it when it is doing well and happy where it is? If you think that space wont accomodate the spike, then do move it to a similar environment/conditions with lots of humidity, air flow and bright light. The flowers will be absolutely gorgeous and be sure to post pics!
Paphgirl March 23rd, 2005, 09:54 AM Congratulations! Sounds promising! Is the trouble that as the spike elongates, it will be too tall? I wonder if you could leave it where it is as long as possible, giving the buds time to mature more? I don't know though, I'm not experienced with moving things around when they're in spike, and would also worry, like you that the change would affect it negatively.
I can't wait to see it! I think this is a very interesting cross and will be interesting to see how it turns out.
wolfcreekmn March 23rd, 2005, 10:13 AM Thanks for your quick response. The problem I was thinking about is it wont fit if it gets to tall. The spike will have about 16 inches to grow then it will hit the glass top and the lights. I will just leave it and keep a eye on it.
Thanks again.
Eric
P.S. I will post pictures of it.
Paphgirl March 23rd, 2005, 10:20 AM Oh....there's a top! Gotcha. So, are there lights are mounted in the top, so it can't be removed to accomodate the tall spike? Just be sure also that you remove the plant before it gets too close to the light.
