View Full Version : My first original cross
paphreek October 23rd, 2005, 08:03 PM I just got 5 flasks of my own cross back. The size of the seedlings varied, but many are big and husky. I just deflasked the first two flasks and they look great. Here's a picture

Ron-NY October 23rd, 2005, 09:11 PM great!!! Ross can you post a pic of both parents for us?
RickL October 23rd, 2005, 09:45 PM They do look stout. They look like allot like barbigerums at this point.
Shady Character October 23rd, 2005, 09:50 PM Congratulations, Ross! I'll bet you can't wait to see some flowers! :D
Stephan October 23rd, 2005, 10:04 PM So --- Hellas is a standard - what are you hoping for? It'll be interesting and those seedlings look good and healthy. I wanna see some photos in about 3 to 5 years mate :)
Cheers
Stephan

Once a plant from the cross blooms, I'll be able to register and name it, assuming someone else hasn't already. What I was hoping for with this cross was to make a positive first step in hybridizing miniature complex hybrids. Only time will tell if this cross has any use. In the mean time, I've been continuing make more crosses, approaching the challenge from two directions: 1. Reducing the size of larger complex Paphs with small species and hybrids and 2. building complex Paphs from the bottom up, using small species. I hope that I live long enough to reach my goal. With each step in the process taking at least 4-7 years to evaluate, it may take a while.
Gideon October 24th, 2005, 12:06 AM Very nice, well done
bench72 October 24th, 2005, 12:20 AM Great healthy plants! Good luck in getting good shaped, nice coloured, mini bulldogs!
And the parents look amazing! Love the Hellas particularly!
Cheers

Ron-NY October 24th, 2005, 02:24 PM Hellas has been used in many croses. It has been a good parent. Hope you get what you are looking for. You are more ambitious that I or is it more patient.
TADD October 24th, 2005, 03:04 PM Can't wait for the finished product next year :poke: Awesome.
Nynaeve October 24th, 2005, 03:07 PM How incredibly cool! Congrats!
Paphgirl October 24th, 2005, 03:10 PM I'd think Hellas was close to your heart, also, Ross!
If the shoe fits...
Mang October 24th, 2005, 03:46 PM WOW! Congrats Ross! I'm pretty sure that you will reach your goal. Nice choice of parents too!
BTW, I have some qs & I hope I'm not troubling/pestering you: -
1-When did you make the cross?
2-How long did seed pod take?
3-How long did it take from germination to reach this stage?
Regards Mang
paphreek October 24th, 2005, 05:35 PM I can't answer your questions completely because I lost some of my records when my computer crashed. Pollination took place on 2/1/04. That's all the info I have. My flasker doesn't give me definite germination dates. He gives me general updates as to seedling viability and when flasks are ready to ship. But from pollination to deflasked seedlings in 20 months is fairly fast, I think.
TADD October 24th, 2005, 06:05 PM Ross, I can't wait for these to be available to us, and to see one bloom.
paphreek October 24th, 2005, 06:58 PM I'll probably release some of the more vigorous seedlings in the spring, assuming they continue to grow well.
TADD October 24th, 2005, 08:47 PM Put me down for at least one! :)

Heather knows that my last name is Hella, although it's Finnish, not Greek as the plant name most likely is.

I hope to get a few members interested in blooming some out, because I doubt that I have the space in the house to bloom out even a quarter of the 150 or so seedlings.
Mang October 25th, 2005, 12:10 AM Thanks Ross for your reply. I'm impressed! A 150 odd seedlings! WOW!

You're email always makes me laugh too. Very creative!

The email address was Julie's idea!
dwclapp October 25th, 2005, 08:46 PM OOOHHHHH mini bulldogs... perfect for those of us who love the complex hybrids but are limited on space. Put me down for a few of those when you decide to let some of them go.

Well, the HOPE is to reduce the size of the complex while maintaining its shape. In one other (barbigerum x complex cross), the seedlings maintained the size of a normal complex, so this first step may not produce the desired results. If I'm lucky, though, a sib of the original cross to produce an F2 generation might bring out more of the barbigerum's small size.
