View Full Version : Paph Double Deception Album
GaryB November 23rd, 2009, 12:37 PM Here are a couple of alba paphs, venustum and sukhakulli, that came into bloom at the same time, so I remade a good cross, Paph Double Deception. Although, I could not find any reference to an album form, so maybe this is not a remake.
I used venustum to carry the pod (opposite of the original cross). I'd love to see some of the venustum coloring, especially the pouch come through on the offspring. Pollination was done 3 months ago, so it will be a few more years before I find out.

Bill Zimmerman November 23rd, 2009, 01:03 PM I haven't seen an albino version of this cross, it will be nice if it works as planned. Sometimes these things turn out to be all colored forms, depending on the specific parents.

...and that is part of what makes it interesting and fun for me.
At least I am starting with a couple of good parents. The venustum came from Marriott Orchids and sukhakulli is a select plant from the Orchid Zone. So, even if a get colored forms, there should be a number of good ones.

tim November 23rd, 2009, 07:29 PM if you look carefully at the warts on the upper margin of the venustum petals, you will notice they are black. black pigment = not an albino...

The whole use of color designations is not uniformly and correctly applied. Even without the black warts, the fact that this flower has green and yellow and the sukhakullii has green makes them not albino. By the strict definition, an albino flower is white and only white; it lacks the compounds, such as anthocyanins, needed for producing the other colors. And since paphs are masculine, they should be referred to as album and not alba.
Green and white flowers are most correctly called alboviridum and green, white and yellow flowers as alboflavoviridum (try saying that 3 times quickly).
bella November 25th, 2009, 10:56 AM a real rear paph:D:D

I agree with a good part of your statement, but consider that an entirely white flower is an alba (album) and flowers lacking anthocyanin expression are albinistic but can be yellow, green or white.

:iagree: Of course you are right. Instead of the word albino I should have said alba (album). Albinos are lacking in red and brown pigment and can be yellow, green, or white.
And in closing, alba (album) has traditionally been used to describe green and/or yellow flowers, so just call the darn things whatever you want 'cause everyone else does and no one can enforce any naming rules anyway. There, I feel better now;)

These terms are used commonly, even if correct or not, so trying to change minds about the subject is a lost cause. Long term hybridizers still call yellow and green flowers albas(albums) and have been doing so for decades.
