Is anyone going to this? Jerry Fischer is giving a talk on "New Developments in Phragmipediums" so if anyone IS going, can you give us a report back? That'd be cool.

Heather,I'll probably be going to the talk if other duties  don't prevent me.

I talked to Jerry and he said he's considering writing a paper on the same topic. I'll keep you posted.

Lovers of rare, exotic or just Minnesota orchids convene

BY MOLLY MILLETT

Pioneer Press

The who's who of the international orchid world will descend on Bloomington this week for "Minnesota Orchid Fever," a national meeting and orchid show, but it's not just for the orchid elite — the public is invited to come and smell the orchids, too.

The event, which begins today and runs through Sunday , is hosted by the Orchid Society of Minnesota and includes a members' meeting and show of the American Orchid Society, as well as meetings of specialty orchid alliances, Orchid Digest and the Mid America Orchid Congress.

If you go, you will be "surrounded by rare and exotic orchids seldom seen in Minnesota," the society promises. You can also listen in on world-famous orchid lecturers talk about topics such as "Orchids of Japan" and "Trends in Vandaceous Intergeneric Breeding." On Sunday afternoon, beginners can get tips on orchid-growing basics. And local, national and international growers and breeders from as far away as South America and Hawaii will display and sell beautiful and exotic specimens as well as more well-known varieties. Your orchid questions are welcome.

The show and sale are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday with "how-to" lectures for beginning orchid growers at noon and 2 p.m. Sunday.

General admission to the show and sale is $5, a price that includes the how-to lectures. For more information, visit www.orchidsocietyofminnesota. com/orchid_show/.

Some facts about orchids and the people who love them, courtesy of the Orchid Society of Minnesota:
Orchids are the second best-selling potted plant, after poinsettias.
Orchids can be as easy to grow as ordinary houseplants. Some thrive on "planned neglect."
Orchids thrive in almost every climate, from the savannas of Africa to jungle treetops in Southeast Asia and South America to the forests, bogs and prairies of Minnesota.
Minnesota's state flower, Cypripedium reginae (also known as the showy ladyslipper), is an orchid. We are the only state in the union to feature an orchid as its state flower. YAY Minnesota!:joy:
Orchids are one of the most prolific and successful flowering plants, with 25,000 to 30,000 species.
The 27,000-member American Orchid Society is, by far, the largest special-interest horticultural organization in the world.
Minnesota's 200-plus member orchid society is as active as any in warmer areas, such as Florida or Hawaii. All are welcome to the monthly meetings at the Orchid Society of Minnesota.

This is the first time in 25 years Minnesota has hosted the American Orchid Society's member meeting and show.
Jason Fischer, the son and associate of world-respected local orchid grower Jerry Fischer, will speak at "Minnesota Orchid Fever" on Japanese orchids. His talk brings together one of the newest directions in orchid culture and his own cultural heritage.

Have fun all you lucky people who are going, and be sure to report back!!

I did make the lecture. One half was devoted to new hybrids including many using Phrag. fischerii. The other half of the lecture chronicled Jerry's trip to Peru to pick up kovachii flasks.
