View Full Version : Dendrobium aggregratum - culture advice? silence882 October 16th, 2005, 09:29 PM Hello all, does anyone know anything about growing this species? I've got no experience with 'em and hoped someone on here might have some idea... Thanks --Stephen Mang October 18th, 2005, 10:27 AM It's a smallish plant but tends to cluster up pretty fast - grows wild here. It's generally tied/mounted on to tree fern here, haven't grown it on a pot! Mang Ron-NY October 18th, 2005, 02:04 PM I have a mounted one and one in a pot. The trick with these, for me, is to give it a bright, dry, cool winter rest. In the winter, I feep it in a southern exposure with temps that drop down into the low 50's at night. From November through the spikes emerging I do not water or fertilize except for infrequent misting so the p-bulbs don't get overly dehydrated. Some people call it d. aggravatum because they can't get it to bloom. Mine blooms religiously for me every spring with the above culture. If you notice in the pic, the p-bulbs will loose some of there plumpness but they plump back up during the course of the summer. BTW, they like having there roots tight in a fast draining medium. I think this one is in straight diatomite. I have this in a 2" pot that is resting in that mug. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a206/Ron-NY/chids/d092fc92.jpg Paphraguy October 18th, 2005, 02:06 PM Hey Ron, that is one beautiful Dendrobium, WOW! Paphgirl October 18th, 2005, 02:14 PM Yes, it's scrumptious! (Stephen, I like your new quote!) Ron-NY October 18th, 2005, 02:15 PM thanks, I have very few Dendrobiums in my collection, except for a small collection of kingianums (9 of them), this one and a thrysiflorum that I can't seem to bloom. Edit: Now that I think of it there may be a few other Dend species that I have also. Paphraguy October 18th, 2005, 02:25 PM I only have one Dendrobium species, spectablis. It grows like a weed, now HUGE with 24+ very tall canes but refuses to bloom. I gave given it the cold treatment even the burn treatment, burnt quite a few leaves in the hot sun but it still refuses to bloom. Any tips? Ron-NY October 18th, 2005, 02:51 PM I assume you mean spectabile, which used to be known as Latourea spectabilis. This one is a warm lover with highs in the mid 80's all year and night temps in the mid to high 60's. Give it light 2500-3500 fc but bring up the light gradually so you don't burn it more :poke: . Humidity around 75-80%. Allow to dry slightly between waterings but don't allow it to remain dry for extended periods. You can fertilize it throughout the year for this one doesn't need a rest period but fertilize less frequently in the winter. You will find that this one needs to be fairly large and rootbound before it blooms for you. It tends to be a winter bloomer but can bloom lightly in the summer as well. Hope you can get it to bloom for you! couscous74 October 18th, 2005, 03:22 PM Great looking flowers Ron :clap2: Paphraguy October 18th, 2005, 03:43 PM Thanks for the tips Ron! Yes, I did mean spectabile (sorry my mistake). I have tried everything but it just doesn't want to bloom. I have even burned a few leaves in direct sun and gave it the cold temps treatment. Maybe, it is just not ready to bloom yet. Ron-NY October 18th, 2005, 05:34 PM Peter is it crammed in it's pot? Many make ther mistake to pot up and they just love to be rootbound. Once rootbound, I bet it will bloom for you. Paphraguy October 18th, 2005, 05:48 PM Ron, I did repot this past summer because the plant got too big. That probably didn't help, I'm sure but I had no choice because the pot cracked in two different places. It is still making new growths. Greenpaph October 18th, 2005, 11:34 PM Ron, Thanks for the info! Mine is definitely overpotted! |
