Just curious. I suppose they're too big to be practical for most of us. :)

Not I, more of a curiosity than a good horticultural subject.

Yes I bought 5 from from Ecuagenera in Ecuador. They are in the US at shows all the time. The species they sell does not get too big (i.e. only about 5 or 6 feet versus 20+ feet)

Wow! I'll have to look into it now :) Thanks lienluu. I guess if other people have them, I have NO excuse not to. That's what I'm going to keep telling myself, anyway.

Take a look at Clark Riley's page. he got his from the same source and has excellent photos and info.

If you do get them, a good potting mix is laterite (which you can get in the fish supply section of any pet store) mixed with osmunda. Selenipediums are found naturally growing in laterite, so it makes sense to use it as a potting medium for these things.

Be warned, they will quickly loose their leaves when you first get them and some of them may die, very difficult to get acclimated.

I was going to ask about culture, what you're growing them in etc. So thanks.
Have they bloomed for you? Curious genus.

mine have not bloomed. but i have seen Selenipedium blooms once. 17 years ago i was at a grower's house in Southern California. She was a very old lady and she pointed at this plant and said

"This stupid thing, i collected it 25 years ago and it has never bloomed for me".

I looked up and noticed some windows at the top of her house so I asked her if i could go to the attic...and she said yes but could not figure out why i wanted to go.

Anyhow, three stories up and i was finally at the top of the plant...and sure enough it was in flower, only she had never noticed because the plant was taller than her house...

Like i said, the species i have bloom on 5-6 feet plants, not 20+ feet...so hopefully soon.
