i don't know if it's true, as i've never flowered my wallisii (or any other long petalled phrag for that matter), but i've heard the petals grow only at night
wonder how giving the plant very long nights after the flowers open would affect petal length

I'd not heard that one before. Interesting. I think I was in the habit of measuring my petals both in the morning and evening (yeah, I know, addict) but I don't remember if I only noticed growth in the morning. I definitely measured more in the morning.

I know it's regarded as a "myth" to keep the petals free from touching anything while they are still growing, but I really paid attention to that just in case it *was* true, I didn't want anything getting in the way and it was noticed by the judges when I took it for AOS judging. My petals topped out at about 55 cm.

Ray,

Hope your wallisii produces more blooms next time! They really like very bright light so maybe upping the light should help. I love this species a lot!

Keep the photos coming.

I too don't let any of my long petaled friends touch anything and I noticed a huge difference from last night to this morning. This really only opened enough to take a picture yesterday and the petals are short compared to today so they grow quickly. I should measure and compare tommorow.

I'd get good petal growth day and night ( I would also measure before and after going to an from work. Its impressive how much they grow on an hourly basis.

So far I haven't seen any wallisii with petals much longer than 24 inches, although text records seem to indicate greater than 30 inches.

Thats a big ole spike on Mt Fallu. What's the parentage of that hybrid.

Hi Rick, That big ole spike on Mt Fallu is at 35" right now and still going. but I have no idea the parentage on it tag simply reads Mt. Fallu and the person I bought it from about three or four years ago dosen't seel orchids anymore and probably wouldn't have been able to tell me. It's been that long since I've bloomed it too all I remember from the last bloom was a large plain green flower. I measured the petals on the Wallisii last night at 7 " and now they are at 9" Looks to be another flower developing below that one or it's going to branch by the looks of it.

This must be the 1st blooming of your wallisii. They are not sequential, but multifloral, and once up to speed they usually have 3 to 5 flowers opening up at about the same time, and that will be it for that spike.

2" every 24 hours is a good rate for petal growth. Pretty wild.

Now you can't see it in the photo but inside that little sheath like area on the spike you can see what looks like another bud developing I thought you ight be able to see it with the light in back of it but it didn't work . you can see it easily in person though. click on photo to enlarge Thanks Ray

That sheath is strange, Ray - do keep us updated on what happens.

Okay, I'm doing the measuring on my PCC morning and evening to test that myth mentioned up above. Petals dropped yesterday when I was at work. Last night they were 7", this morning they are at 9". Will check again tonight and update. (I betcha they'll grow during the day, though.) :)

Well Heather the petals on the Wallisii are at 13 inches and I don't think that they will get any longer. and that other bud seems to just sit there most likely won't develop.but in person you can clearly make out the bud.The spike on Mt Falau is at 37 inches and I think will be at 40 before the buds start to emerge. What a large plant.

Well, my petals grew 3/4" today while I was at work, so they do seem to grow both day and night. :D
