View Full Version : Mass. Show
fred September 30th, 2005, 09:38 AM Well I survived another show set up Yesterday went up to Welesely Mass. and set up our exhibit and can't believe I foegot to bring a camera.I met likespaphs there early Brian had volentered to help and was a busy guy all day long Everything seemed to go without incident which was great. managed to get back on the road by 4:30 with all plants regeristered. and with a slight detour managed to find my way back to the highway during a brief but powerful storm depending what part of the state you were in.All the people didn't show while I was there but from what I saw it looks to be a nice show. I managed to get a plant or two to take home with me one was a Vert x Sanderianum fron Nick at A&P seeing as how I might not make it back up during the show I asked if he would sell me a plant early. The plant is growing a little strange the long petales are a little twisted and the pouch isn't perfect I like the cross and hope the next bloom will be normal. Now I need some rest and recoup. Ray
Paphgirl September 30th, 2005, 09:40 AM Oh good, I was hoping you'd post Ray - what plants did you enter so we can look for them tomorrow?
(oh, and yeah, that was a nasty storm, kept SO in DC until late! Sorry you had to be driving through it. Sox won though. :D)
fred September 30th, 2005, 10:26 AM Hi Heather I entered Ten plants , an Lc Jungle elf, Paph Ron Williams that looked so much better a few weeks ago with five flowers in bloom now only two left but we needed plants or so I was told we ended up with a full table . Let me know what you think of our display setup it 's a new idea that a friend and I put together under all that black material that we had fitted by one of our members is a skelton of pvc pipe it was supposed to be lightweight so that any member could take it on the road to do shows with little trouble. also I entered Cycnoches Barthiorum and a small Phal. Francis Potter second blooming for me but I like it a lot looks like Violeca. and The tall multifloral the name skips my mind right now and I entered the Dollgoldi even tyhough it's almost done in fact it wasn't looking so good when I left but really I was told when I started this we only had ten plants but you will see many more showed up at the last minute which poses a problem in itself they all have to be regestired and that is a feat to itself if your not used to doing it.just takes time .I also have there Justa Doll It;s a little paph with two blooms I bet you'll like it and Neeri Glow which I had to cut a bloom off just yesterday but still two blooms on the plant.Your going to have a great time . Capoe and the Islands really go all out on there displays. WE ended up not doing anything with the Theme September's Song, because the member who designed what we were to use came out let's just say it didn't work Last minute preps.Have fun and stay away from the vendors LOL Ray
dustyatticstuff September 30th, 2005, 10:27 AM Hi Ray,
Yes, that was some storm. We got it here in Maine, too. I was afraid that the roof on the barn was going to go flying off in pieces. Glad you made it out safely, Ray.
Hey, I was thinking about bringing my camera! I'm sure between Heather & myself, we should take plenty of photos.
Heee Heee, I'm psyched!
fred September 30th, 2005, 10:32 AM Hi Sue That's great supposed to be a great sunny day it's a fabulous place beautiful grounds the vendors are set up in a big tent that should let lots of light in so you can see all the great plants they brought to sell. Have Fun Ray
Paphgirl September 30th, 2005, 10:37 AM I wish you were coming Ray!
Susan, you better bring your camera, because you know my photos are always awful, and you are by FAR the better photographer.
dustyatticstuff September 30th, 2005, 10:44 AM No, I'm not, Heather. Please bring your camera! Hmmmm I think Nina is coming with me. She also has her own camera.
Ray, I wish you could be there! Good luck with your exhibit!!!
Hmmm...I'd better check out my credit card balance.
Paphgirl September 30th, 2005, 10:54 AM Funny, I was just getting ready to pay bills and check my balances.
Susan, Don't worry, I'm definitely bringing the camera, but you guys should bring your's also!
I'm looking forward to New Hampshire's display also, usually they are very good. I wanted to help out but missed the Sept. meeting, and then had work. I want to clerk in February for their show though.
I've made up about 60 cards for the forum, I am hoping they will let me leave them on the table w/ other flyers and educational information. I do hope I spelled everything correctly.
fred September 30th, 2005, 11:17 AM Susan Do You know Joana Eckstrom from NH she did so much for the show and she is also helping with our show. Her display is right close to ours and her and her husband specialize in Vanda's wait til you see one of them Her husband told me that they think it's over fifty years old. Must be at least six feet tall very impressive. Ray
dustyatticstuff September 30th, 2005, 05:07 PM Ray, I don't know Joana, but I will definitely look for that Vanda. At 6 feet tall, I probably can't miss it. I've heard that orchids can live for a long time, but 50 years is very impressive!!
And, speaking of Vandas, I haven't "gone there" and purchased one yet, but I do really admire the blue ones, and suspect that I could be easily pursuaded. I'm also worried about what kinds of plants my daughter might end up picking up in her hot little hands, looking at me with her big sad blue eyes with "The Look" that says "Please Buy This For Me!"
Good thing I'm starting a part-time job in a few weeks.
Paphgirl September 30th, 2005, 05:59 PM I'm also worried about what kinds of plants my daughter might end up picking up in her hot little hands, looking at me with her big sad blue eyes with "The Look" that says "Please Buy This For Me!"
Yes, and don't forget me!
I have dark brown eyes, and they are rather devilish and generally say "go for it, just buy it, you know you want it, you only live once!"
fred September 30th, 2005, 06:13 PM That's the Spirit!
dustyatticstuff September 30th, 2005, 06:30 PM Doomed.....I'm doomed!!!!
Ron-NY September 30th, 2005, 07:10 PM Have a great time guys!! Wish I had time to drive out. I bet it is only 3 or so hours but atlas I am too busy this weekend.
fred September 30th, 2005, 07:40 PM You could have hitch hiked with Glenn I did getbto talk with him a bit yesterday while he was setting up.
dustyatticstuff September 30th, 2005, 10:33 PM Hi Ron,
I would have liked to have met you, too. We'll take lots of photos.
TADD October 1st, 2005, 06:26 AM Good Luck Ladies! Shop like ya mean it!
likespaphs October 1st, 2005, 08:05 AM i think there's some neat stuff all around
mountain orchids has a neat little varigated dendrobium, which i think got a chm, marlow has a superneat catasetum in his display that i get to take home after the show (i bought it, i'm not gonna steal it)
i spent way too much, but got way too much
my haul:
piping rock: charlesworthii (spike)
sukhakulii (spike?)
appletonianum (spike)
pupuratum (spike)
marlow orchids: catasetum sp. (flower)
coryanthes fieldingii
probably gonna end up getting a mastersianum from tindara, though i know i shouldn't
Paphgirl October 1st, 2005, 08:19 AM That's not that much! :poke:
But, hopefully that means you left some for us! :D
Nice haul!

likespaphs October 1st, 2005, 08:23 AM oh yeh, piping rock has vietnamense
krazy kool colored mottled leaves
Paphgirl October 1st, 2005, 08:27 AM I have a vietnamense from Piping Rock from last year, but it was a tiny seedling, will be interesting to see what they look like this year.
Okay! I'm out of here. Got to beat Susan to the sales tables...:poke:
Ta!
Back w/ pics tonight.
fred October 1st, 2005, 09:02 AM Hi Brian , I was way too busy on Thurs when I got home I realized I didn't check out any vendors except A&P my mistake. I may go to breakdown just don't know yet. if I do Maybe there will be something decent left.wishful thinking.Ray
likespaphs October 1st, 2005, 09:10 AM i'm going back to break down
then that's it
i swear off elm bank for at least a year
(if there are some neat ones left, i might even get a (some) vinicolors... i'm whispering because i'm typically a species fan, but those vinis...)
fred October 1st, 2005, 09:24 AM I Know what you mean A&P had some others I liked very much. You saw the one I bought not the greatest single plant kinda sad but there was somthing about it that if I didn't get it I would have kept saying I shoulda. Maybe I'll see you tommorow. I'm still recouperating. I have RA and that about did me in but I do enjoy it.did you notice if I had any ribbons . I know you said you were clerking on the Ocean State table I own all the slippers. and I think you saw my catsetuem just thought maybe you can recall I know how clerking can get . did you enjoy clerking. Ray
likespaphs October 1st, 2005, 09:31 AM i clerked. it was fun. i was a pointer, so i ran ahead of the judges and found the plants in the displays
my team did dendrobiums (bummer) and plants grown on windowsills or under lights
i didn't notice ribbons, though i didn't look. the only ribbon i remember seeing at the whole show was...umm, well, i can't think of...
oh right, mountain orchids won with the best odont in show
Paphgirl October 1st, 2005, 04:14 PM Ray - that Armeni White cross was your's right? It had a blue ribbon, and I took pics of the others I thought were your's w/ their ribbons.
Got a few things to do before a full report...was a great show though, some really nice displays, and I really enjoyed meeting Susan and Christina. We all excercised a good amount of restraint, though I fell pray to yet another (and another) besseae.
More after I unload, feed cat, upload pics and, set up aquarium!
Ron-NY October 1st, 2005, 04:57 PM come on Heather where are your priorities !! Here i sit at home and you tease us ;~)
Couldn't make it due the the kids fall activities. If I hitched a ride with Glen I would have had to leave on Thursday. I have to work on Friday's so that wasn't an option.
I may consider the Cape and Island Show in January. Do others attend that? I am always looking for a diversion after the holidays.
fred October 1st, 2005, 05:01 PM Hi Heather Thanks for the info I still hadn't heard a thing yet. I am on my way out but I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the show. Bye and Thanks again That Armeni White was mine as were all the other slippers on that table the other bud had just opened about four days ago so it probably wasn;t pure white yet. they have a tinge of green when they first open. I had hoped that would do good. I also thought Justa Doll might do well. The bigger slippers were on there way out but I was told we needed plants and to please put them in. Bye Ray

I know, I'm working on it! Geesh!
Glen and I had a nice chat about you, Ron :poke:. I went straight there and bought from him first before anything else. Seriously, he said you were always mentioning the forum. I gave him our card. I gave Frank from Tindara our card also (he was super nice as always and offered me 10% off, but didn't have anything I wanted, but Susan and Christina bought from him, and he gave them the 10% off which I thought was very nice!), also gave a card to a miscellaneous guy who was hemming and hawing over a besseae. He seemed to be falling for the slippers. I also gave Mass Hort. ALL our cards, and they put them out on their front table, where the raffle plants were. So, maybe we'll get some new members.
Should I post pics here, or in the gallery? Hmm....
Here's three that take priority, for Ray - from Ocean State Society's Display, I think these paphs are Ray's - note the ribbons!

It was GREAT meeting Susan and Christina, Christina's getting hooked, I can tell, she's about this ----- far away from becoming a total orchid nut. :D
Paphgirl October 1st, 2005, 05:14 PM Yep, Ray, Justa Doll got a yellow!
Oh, I forgot to mention, I also got a Paph. philippinense alba! 4 growths, it's sweet! I couldn't resist. The one in that family I was missing. So just that and the two besseaes.
Pete got a sukhakulii (finally!!!)
likespaphs October 1st, 2005, 06:49 PM Sometimes working weekends is no fun. It would have been nice to meet y'all and show youze guys around...Spent so much time there i'm seeing it my dreams.
Perhaps i can get a day off for cape and the islands or new hampshire.
dustyatticstuff October 1st, 2005, 08:39 PM WOW!! That was so great, despite the long ride and almost running out of gas on the way home. It was so much fun meeting Heather. (She is such a sweetie) Christina got an almost white Phal (Amabilis 4N '585') from Brennen's Orchids. I bought a Hrnrietta Fukiwara from Tiandra Orchids. I really liked the bloom as it had more of the stance of the haynaldianum than from the primulinum. And the 10% discount from knowing Heather was really sweet, too! :-dance: And Lo & behold, Christina scoffed up this little Brachy hybrid (leucochillium 'Red Apple' c Hsinying Concon 'Golden Bell) that she was drawn to. The dorsal on it was broken, so they sold it to us for 50% off. I'll post photos of our haul later. I think Heather is right about Christina being this...close away from being addicted. We discussed where she wants to keep her plants and I got the sense that she wants her OWN growing area where she can be close to her plants.
There were some beautiful plants and displays there and sometimes I was either babbling...or speechless! I took photos, but I'm not sure who's displays I photographed. I also am not very good with identifying non-Paph species, so I'll just post my photos and let everyone else let me know what they are.
There were TONS of Paph Maudiae 'The Queen.' One was even a raffle plant. I cannot believe how huge the blooms were. They certainly make a striking display when they are massed together.
Also those besseaes!!! I never realized how small and delicate they are. However, with that bright red color and wonderful form, they certainly pack a punch!!! I noticed folks just gazing at them like they were hypnotized.
What a great day!!!!! Thanks Heather!!!! If I get any good photos, I'll post later.
Best,
Paphgirl October 1st, 2005, 09:05 PM Ditto!
Took me a while to figure things out at shows. I remember my first well. I kept seeing this one phrag and just WANTED it. Worked out, and all downhill (no UPhill!) from there!
We had fun, I loved meeting you two!
Susan, you got a nice cross - best of both parents! I love haynaldianum (another coming this week! Where *will* it go?)
Oh Tadd - the only fair cross I saw was at Tindara - Faire Maude. It was nice but more Maude than Faire, so I left it alone. Glen didn't seem to have anything w/ him that was fair. realated, but I owe you, dude! :)

Best,
Paphraguy October 1st, 2005, 09:25 PM Sounds like you guys had fun! What an excellent way to spend a nice weekend!
TADD October 1st, 2005, 09:39 PM Thanks for thinking of me... I have two of 'em already! Susan hope it made a small impression... Shows rock! Henrietta Fujiwara is an extremely nice plant. Is it the alba or coloratum version?
fred October 1st, 2005, 10:19 PM Hi Heather just got in and want to thank you for these pictures. I haven't heard from any of our members so this is a nice surprise. Ray
dustyatticstuff October 2nd, 2005, 12:28 AM Hey Tadd, it was the album, but I would have preferred the coloratum. That's OK. I'm starting to like these greenies. Heather has a better eye than I do as to the fairieanums. I did not notice any. If they had blooming species plants, I think I would have noticed.
Ray, yes, congratulations are in order. You did get ribbons. I was just too dazed and confused to figure out what you got for what plant. Also your plant that you picked up Thursday night is very interesting. I did not see any more like that. (Heather, help me...did you see any?) It is definitely interesting, and if it is a first blooming, I bet ya that the pouch will figure it out the next time.
Best,
Paphgirl October 2nd, 2005, 06:44 AM Hi Heather just got in and want to thank you for these pictures. I haven't heard from any of our members so this is a nice surprise. Ray
:)
I remembered waaay back in March or April when the forum was new, seeing your roth, and taking pics. So I thought I'd do it again for ya!
Congratulations!!
likespaphs October 2nd, 2005, 09:16 AM hey ray (that kinda rhymns...), you goin' back up to take the show down?
found the cord that connects the camera to the computer, so i'll be able to download photos now. i'm sneaking out of work today (oh wait, this a public forum...keep this on the d.l.) and i'll try to take a picture or two. any requests?
Paphgirl October 2nd, 2005, 09:26 AM If that Stanhopea has opened yet, that'd be nice to see. It wasn't open when we were thre yesterday. I think it was in the display next to Piping Rock's, but not certain.

there were two stanhopeas when i clerked that weren't open. one in the display kinda in the center (central mass orchid society?). the one you mentioned is in the display of a couple of people in the MOS, at least one of them is in the MOS, i don't remember with whom she did the display, though
was there an open stanhopea?
Paphgirl October 2nd, 2005, 09:40 AM there were two stanhopeas when i clerked that weren't open. one in the display kinda in the center (central mass orchid society?). the one you mentioned is in the display of a couple of people in the MOS, at least one of them is in the MOS, i don't remember with whom she did the display, though

Yes, I thought there were two but couldn't remember where the other one was, I think you are right it must have been the Central NE display, and the other is the one I was thinking of. Neither were open yet yesterday.
Paphgirl October 2nd, 2005, 03:41 PM Hey, I won one of the raffles! They said it was for one of the phals. The only Paph was one of 'The Queen's. Anyway, that's kind of nice cause I wanted to replace the one I recently killed (that was the one the SO picked out) anyway. :)
fred October 2nd, 2005, 06:21 PM Congrats. I was there and didn't hear your name . I ended up breaking down but that place sure clearsd out quick
Paphgirl October 2nd, 2005, 06:23 PM Thanks! It was yesterday's actually. I guess they tried to call me yesterday but didn't leave a message. First I asked them to give it to Brian to have him ship it to me, but I called them back and had them give it to Ulla at Kelley's Korner, cause we have the auction next weekend, so I'll see her there anyway. Hopefully it all worked out. :)
fred October 2nd, 2005, 06:36 PM Good for you So Kelly's attends your auction? You people must rate.
dustyatticstuff October 2nd, 2005, 06:38 PM WOW! Congratulations! They had some very pretty phals in that raffle.
Paphgirl October 2nd, 2005, 06:41 PM Good for you So Kelly's attends your auction? You people must rate.
Yeah, they're members of our society. When I saw them yesterday, I told Jan I'd see him next week and he said only Ulla would be there. They are really sweet people, it's nice too, cause now, I can order supplies and not pay shipping! :D I'm really enjoying being a society member (haha) people are SO nice, and it's a small world so you run in to people all over the place. I'm tempted to join a few others, but I just don't know how often I could get to the other meetings. I've pretty much arranged my work schedule around NHOS.
