Sweet, Stan!
How are the frogs liken' it? What's in the deli containers on the right (and don't you dare say fruit flies...) This weekend, I think I am having to invest in an aquarium. I'm afraid my fish are going to suffer from the low temps. I worry every night, all night. Got to get them out of there! I'm also afraid I may need new plants. :(
Your setup looks great!

I didn't realize you'd moved!
So you're back in Rochester? Where abouts?

Stan:
Are you fruitfly the big ones or the small ones. Are the flightless mutant lab flies that you can culture with malt vinegar with mash potatoes and a sprinkle of yeast? How do you keep them from drowning in the mash potato mixture?

Paphman

i have a mixture i made up that seems to work well but yes the main ingredient is patato flakes/sugar/yeast. the flies do not drown its like a jello substance or pudding. i culture wingless and flightless and both sizes melanogastor and hydei

Hi Stan:
Your orchids will grow very fast and they will reguire more watering. I like your setup and my setup is very similar except I have a 5 foot wire mesh to keep the cat out.

Can you tell me more about the 5' mesh? What's it like? How do you get in to care for the plants? (Or, could you post a photo? I'd love to see.)

Hi Paphgirl:
The 5 foot mesh is the stuff used in construction for stucco. I use the metal bands used to hold wiring cables to hold the fence up. It is attached to a stand used to hold your extra clothing and I hang the lights from it. All my plants are on the ground and I water them twice a week. I just unhook the metal bands and remove the wire mesh so I can water them. The cat was still playing with the leaves of the orchid so I bought some fine mesh that his paws could not get into mesh and it worked. So far my Paph rothschildianum seedlings are growing like weeds under 400 MH on for 12 hrs a day.

Y'all are making me so jealous (no, make that envious & admiring) of your growing setups (you & Grandma MC), I guess I need to get moving & set up my own growing area for the fall. Right now, I go outside & it's cooler, & I look at the plants to be moved in-yikes, there's too many! And I was too late picking up some fans (I went to the Home & Garden center to get a narrow, upright fan & they said they shipped them all off to the DC Armory for Katrina victims-yes, I know they need them more than my plants do). Kudos to you for setting everything up so efficiently, I think the pebbles underneath make everything look very natural & jungley...Thistle

Well, I've finally set up a shelving unit in my sunroom (thanks to you guys), it's 14' x 16' , on the south wall, I've put 4 OMAR shelves from IKEA (36.25" x 14"x 36.25"), w/ 3 sets (2 each) of 48" shoplights-the shelf is right next to the s-facing window, w/ the fluorescents underneath & 2 taller lighting units (Target) w/ 3 60w cf bulbs on the ends. I pushed my kids ( & their TV watching) onto the west & north walls, w/ a sofa & loveseat, (& a few tables & plants-paphs, a bird of paradise, hibiscus, bromeliads)...I will try to figure out how to post pics this weekend...I'm trying to move everything inside...Linda

Congratulations and good luck with your new set-up. One small suggestion: you may wish to put up a sheet of mylar on your walls. This will greatly improve reflectivity of light to the benefit of your orchids and protect your walls from water sprays etc.

I've heard mylar is a good thing to have on walls in an artificial light set up. Any recommendations on where to get mylar? Stuff from Home Depot OK? Thanks!
