View Full Version : Phragmipedium warscewiczianum???
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 09:42 AM Phragmipedium warscewiczianum 'Windy Hill'. Is this the real deal?

I acquired this plant this past April and it has grown even larger in just a few months. All the other warscewiczianums that I have seen are much much smaller including the one I already have but this one is a monster at 24" in LS with long slender stiff leaves. All the other warsces have shorter and stubbier leaves. It did arrive with a spike but unfortunately, the spike never made it due to stress from being shipped twice and it just shrivelled up. I think it is a hybrid but Heather did remind me that Jon said he has seen a larger one just like it. Are there larger versions of warscewiczianums that I'm not aware of?

Paphgirl September 24th, 2005, 09:50 AM Oh, I was hoping for an updated photo...no?
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 09:54 AM Yes, I'll try and take one and post later.

The thread in which Jon speaks of other large warscewiczeanum.
TADD September 24th, 2005, 10:09 AM I have nothing to add sorry! My little guy is a little 6 inch total leafspan. I hope it is the biggun type cause I am sure it was not inexpensive!
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 10:17 AM Thanks, Heather! I did miss those posts. And yes, it does look very much like the giant warsce and I still think it is not the real deal because most warsces I have seen are a lot smaller with shorter, stubbier leaves unless there is a larger variety that I'm not aware of!

I also have a "Windy Hill" warsce. I got it from Orchid babies who have pretty good connections to Windy Hill. Mine is short and spikey. It's got 4 or so growths, and has bloomed, and the leaf span is no more than 15". It is also a much lighter green than my wallisii. I also have a warcse "Fu Manchu" (Orchids Limited source). It has not bloomed yet, but the plant is the same as the Windy Hill.
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 11:15 AM Thanks Rick! I think it may be a hybrid, warsce x caudatum OR just a dark, non sanderae caudatum (I don't know what the blooms look like yet), perhaps? I don't know but I do know that it does not look like the regular warsce.
RickL September 24th, 2005, 11:18 AM I can't vouch for it being a warsce (in general), but I severely doubt its a Windy Hill warsce.
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 11:23 AM It actually came directly from Windy Hills to Heather and then to me and I suspect it could be a mislabled plant. I don't know.

Maybe you ought to check with Maralyn to see if there is that much variation in her warsce's, or if you have a miss label.
Paphgirl September 24th, 2005, 12:04 PM We did check with Marilyn, but for the life of me I can't find the emails. I think that may have been when I was on the other laptop, so I'll check at home tonight.
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 12:13 PM Yes, I remember that email and she did say to wait and see what the flowers look like and then decide. She also did say that warsecs are not bred to get very large.
Paphraguy September 24th, 2005, 02:10 PM Here is the updated photo (taken a few minutes ago). The LS is 26"

Paphgirl September 24th, 2005, 02:14 PM I dunno, we'll just have to wait. My lindenii is huge too.
Stephan September 25th, 2005, 11:28 PM Send it here - I'll take it off you hands
Paphgirl September 26th, 2005, 08:22 AM Seriously!
I'm happy to take it off his hands as well!
Paphraguy September 26th, 2005, 09:09 AM Heather, you know you're getting the first div. The matured growths look like they are ready to spike, so lets hope they do SOON!
