I'm so disappointed.
I tivo'd Martha's new show this morning, and Peter mentioned that he thought there was a repotting lesson on today. She has a fake Janco greenhouse in her studio - I mean it isn't fake, but it is indoors.

Sure enough - here is Martha and Susan Lucci repotting orchids. Susan brought her a fairly healthy looking phal as a gift! Apparently assuming like the rest of us, that Martha knows how to grow orchids. Hmmm, not so much!

The first thing I noticed, is that the plant to be repotted was called a "sad looking dendrobium" which actually looked quite healthy, for an oncidium. For a dendro, it does indeed look quite pathetic.

So she lifted out this rootbound little plant - and it looked like someone had *pre* unpotted it for her. There was very very little media that I saw. Then, she said
"Trim off anything that's unsightly" Hm, that's very helpful Martha!
Then she chose a pot, but didn't explain why she chose the pot she did.
Then, she sort of manhandled some sort of way too large CHC mix around it, barely, the plant will never survive this! Also, it looked as though the mix would have been good for a dend., but not this plant, the CHC pieces were about the size of my cell phone.

Anyone actually trying to LEARN this will fail miserably!
I have half a mind to leave her a negative email.

You know, when we first opened the forum, I emailed both Martha (who was just out of prison) and Ellen Degeneres. Neither have called me yet, or visited the forum, as far as I know. Martha really could learn a thing or two!

 So, she did say that plant was a Dend? I had a good chuckle but I wasnt so sure what she had said because I was busy at the time. Yep, she could learn a lot from us! I do know that she loves Paphs and she herself said on TV that she has traveled to Asia just to see them in the wild.

Oh yes, she absolutely did! It was NOT a dend. by any stretch of the imagination. Whoever planned that segment should be fired!

It was AWFULl!!

I know it was just so laughable. She should fire the writers, you're right! She was also multitasking, so not totally her fault, really.

I love Ellen Degeneres more than I love Martha Stewart. MS went to Asia to see slippers in the wild? Dang! I can't believe she didn't take me along. :(

Orchid how-to segments on TV shows really are geared toward people who can't actually care if the plant lives or dies. Even Thom Felicia got it wrong on Queer Eye. When a queer guy gets it wrong, you know the show's only there to fill space between commercials.

There are orchid growers and there is the rest of the world. 8)

Did you notice how sorry looking that Phal Susan brought with her and Martha said it had such nice healthy leaves? Those leaves were floppy and not healthy looking at all to me.

Oh now that is really funny. How embarrassing! You would think Martha had learned her lesson: do your own research! :disappointed:

Shady, She didn't take you to Peru either? :disappointed:
Too funny about Thom - and Queer Eye is ALWAYS using orchids. You'd think....

Peter - I did noticed the phal leaves were a bit droopy looking, but not too bad. Come to think of it, I don't think they even said what kind it was!

I love Ellen - I think she is hilarious. I thought we might have a chance with her, because she is always looking for people who do sort of unusual things to just call up out of the blue. Now that we have a new domain name, I should email her again.

In all seriousness, If I EVER get my act together and produce an outlien, we're going to do a cable access show on my plants. It was going to be, and will still to some extent, be an Orchids 101 type thing, but now of course will have to focus on slippers, since that's pretty much what I have. My SO is the head of the local cable channel. I live in a very small town as you all probably know by now. See epodunk.com for more. I am pretty sure people call me the "orchid woman" behind my back. The convenience store orders me extra water, and the women at the PO, (Julie, Chris, and Ran-dell, thanks guys!) have my packages AT the counter waiting for me at 9 am and yell about other POs when it takes three days for things to arrive. I went in the other day for a pickup, and Chris went off to find my package, and I was like, WAIT - it's already here! Couldn't believe it. They are soooo good to me. I always see the same people at the PO at 9am, and sort of think of them as the town "specials", and frankly realize I am probably thought of in the same way.

I will say, Martha has had some good Katrina coverage on - past interviews she's done down there, and letting people know who they've heard from, which is comforting. Probably it will take a while to iron out the kinks. (Why I didn't do the cable show a year ago!)

That's so funny!-I work in a garden center ( just started back, now that my kids are in school) & I had a customer come in today & she looked at me & said, 'I saw Martha today"-my mind went blank & I was backpedaling-we have an employee named Margie (our perennial guru), who I thought she was talking about, & I stood there & went , 'Yes...?' & she started telling me how Martha planted a pot & used some special weed block (after filling the bottom w/ packing peanuts) , so, once I caught on to who she was talking about, I showed her the weed block, & then told her she could probably just use newspaper, but I was totally thrown for a minute ...

I have heard that Martha is having a greenhouse built and plans on growing orchids in it. I am sure her gardener will take care of them for her !

She already has a HUGE greenhouse full of plants, fruit trees, orchids and Paphs. I remember seeing it on TV not too long ago.

I have a love/hate thing with Martha. I love to hate her!!!

Seriously, she seems so perfect, makes it look so easy, that us mere mortals cannot keep up with her. Of course, one forgets all the little "helpers" she has to make things look so effortlessly perfect. Her Christmas specials really crack me up. I remember her making garlands with nuts, and the nuts had to be DRILLED in order to string them. She had huge (probably Longaberger, of course) baskets full to the brims with all sorts of drilled nuts. I'm sure Martha did not sit down and drill all those nuts herself; probably her Christmas Elves did.

And people like me get sucked in, not realizing Martha has all these little helpers, and we go around thinking we are schlumps because we don't drill little holes in nuts to hang up pretty garlands. Grrrrrr.
