View Full Version : Definition of the term "Pot Watering"
Paphgirl March 1st, 2005, 10:06 AM I was reading last night about Paph. tigrinum (I have a plant that has been in sheath since late November.) The book said to "be sure to pot water only as the buds can rot in the sheath while still forming in the leaf axils."
So, I'm assuming that just means to make sure to water the mix, not the leaves? I've never heard that term before.
Thanks!

I don't know the answer since I'm also new at growing a tig but do let me know when you find out. Love your avatar!
ChrisMc March 2nd, 2005, 12:47 PM Yes, water the individual pot instead of using a sprinkler system.
Paphgirl March 2nd, 2005, 03:21 PM Thanks, that's what I figured but hadn't heard that specific term for it. That's how I water normally so I guess I don't have to worry about it.
Anonymous March 2nd, 2005, 08:19 PM Somebody's been reading Lance's new book... Yep, that goes for that wand watering stuff too. I guess I better keep mine away from some that I mist too...but I don't have a bud yet... Someday I'm going to have to get much more efficient watering stuff as I'm still doing the carrying to the sink deal. I only have 60+ (maybe I don't want to count...ha!)...all on 3, 4 or 5+ day schedules, but it ain't as fun when most come due the same day!

Or at least looking up! No time to read it lately, (I'm always here, LOL!)
Okay - so get yourself an 8L Hozelink sprayer, will ya? I swear that thing has changed my life! I still lug to the sink every now and then for a good soak and some therapy, but the sprayer makes it all SO much easier. They are worth the money. The 8L is better than the 5L for some reason. I just came back from almost 4 weeks vacation, and there is NO WAY I would have trusted someone else to care for my plants if they'd had to move them all twice a week.
Get a sprayer!
(An aside, my partner thought I was nuts, when sitting at breakfast in Grenada one day I yelled "hey! That guy watering the plants has my sprayer!" Talk about withdrawl! )

that's all well and good, but where do I get one of these sprayers? Any on-line suggestions?
Thank you,
Andrew.
Paphraguy March 3rd, 2005, 10:43 AM I got a cheap one from Walmart.
Paphgirl March 3rd, 2005, 11:56 AM Sorry, I got mine at Kelley's Korner supplies in Maine. They have great stuff!
Anonymous March 3rd, 2005, 05:23 PM Well I'll need to get something a bit more than trays filled with rocks to catch the overflow. I plan on moving stuff to the basement and going HID at some point...but that's a major undertaking with getting it properly vented and sealed! Plus, I don't have a sink down there and would like to put that in the grow room... And, I've only been at this barely longer than Paphgirl...oh my...!!!

Oh good, another newbie! ;)
Seriously though, I have the trays w/ grids on top and haven't had any problems with them overflowing, but as Pete mentioned in the growing spaces photo thread, I clean my trays on a weekly basis (I'm a little anal, and love spending time w/ my plants!) Watering took me all day though before I got the sprayer.
I thought about doing HPS in our basement also but same issues as you. I have a recessed ceiling over my growing space and despite the fact that I'd be willing to deal with the bright light in my living room, other household members are not, and the plants would be too close to the light. So, that's on hold for now, though I have a gift certificate to Growco for an HPS when I'm ready.
Anonymous March 4th, 2005, 06:17 PM Yes, another obsessed Newbie that went nuts and bought tons of them in a very short period of time...If I can generalize for you too!
I do have 1/3 of my basement unfinished and can fairly easily section part of it off and seal it up pretty well. The issue will be getting a vent to the outside...The good thing is that section has a bathroom rough in so I have the drainage covered for a sink, tables, etc... And, the bigger issue is that's going to take a lot of time to do it right!

Obsessed? Who said anything about obsessed?
Okay, I'm obsessed.
Seriously though - I'm in the same boat, except have no drains and we rent, so that's a big issue, we aren't technically supposed to modify or drill holes in the ceiling and such nonsense. So, I'm trying to work w/ sun and wonderlights, which are expensive for probably no gain, but it is all I've got. I am reblooming a couple of phrags, so thank goodness at least some are getting enough light for that anyway. I'm not convinced.
Terp- you go to the Paph forum in DC? If so, How was it? Any pics? If I'd been around I'd have tried to go.
Slipperhead March 4th, 2005, 06:41 PM Heather,
Here are some photos from the Paph Forum. Perhaps I should post this link in the photo section. I met JohnnDC and Ki from the other list and several fellow Virginia Orchid Society members were also in attendance. Two of my fav vendors, Marriott and Bloomfield, were there also!
Big Fun!

There are other nice photos from the same event on Allen Blacks orhcid photo site.
Paphgirl March 4th, 2005, 06:49 PM Oh thank god someone took pics, I've seen no decent paph pics and it is the paph forum for chrissakes!
Anonymous March 4th, 2005, 07:10 PM What?! No pictures of me? :D I tried to make it very obvious to Forum Members who I was...the only one wearing a Terps Hat!
Yeah, put these on the pics section! Thanks for posting them!!!!!!!
Harold Koopowitz did another presentation at the NCOS meeting the following Monday on all of the new Paphs...was pretty sad to hear some of the stuff. Like that there were more plants collected in the 6 months prior to the CITES changes than the previous 100 years combined! And, that many countries don't have the same interpretation of CITES as the US and tons of plants still go there...
Slipperhead March 4th, 2005, 09:09 PM That was my first visit to the Paph Forum and I had a nice time. I'll enjoy it more the next time now that I know the "lay of the land" so to speak. I'll get there earlier in the day and maybe check out the rest of the auboretum the previous day. It is a nice place.
I enjoyed the presentations by the first speaker, Mr. Cribbs from Kew, and from Mr. Antec on his paph culture. I've heard Koopowitz speak many times and lined him up for two appearances at the San Diego County Orchid Society meetings during my tenure there as VP.
The show plants were impressive. I've never seen so many paphs on display at one time before! My favorite plant, other than Hadley's complexes, was a beautiful pot of a cypripedium species. The bloom had snow white pouches the size of a dime or so! I believe they were displayed by Woodstream.
A good time was had by all!
