Dear all,
I am Aidyn from Melbourne (Australia) and I am a new in your community. I have long experience growing Hoyas and I just started growing some paphs and just got two phrags: Schroederae AM-RHS and Grande Chinaman. Could you pls help me with dome growing tips or advice some web sites. When I have bought them on the orchid show three different growers gave me very different tips how to grow them, particular about light and watering conditions.

Your help is highly appreciated
cheers
Aidyn

Welcome! Both Schroederae and Grande are very easy to grow plants. Basically provide lots of water and high light.

Many thanx, Casey
do they need to dry out between watering and what do you mean by high light? I grow them under 70% mesh conditions. How often to fertilize them?
cheers

Welcome to the forum! I have a Grande for a few years now and I find it very easy. I grow it on a windowsill...water it everyday in the summer and fertilize lightly once a week.

Many thanx, Slipperguy
I am reading some of your Forum’s correspondences and see that some of you are growing Phrags in the saucers or even in running water(?!). As a new orchid grower I was sure that too much water is the kiss of death for orchids. And still can not believe that they need so much water....

Regarding light conditions - the person who sold me these phrags told me that he is growing them under 2x70% mesh conditions (he lives in Adelaide).

Who much light do phrags need (at least ones which I have)?

We are having early spring here in Australia and night t-ra could be as low as 8-10oC.
Can I keep my phrags in water if night t-ra get down to 8-10oC at night?
many thanx again
cheers
Aidyn

Welcome Aidyn! I recently got myself a Phrag Grande and so far it is growing nicely. I also grow it on a sunny window and I have been told to grow it wet.

Hi Aidyn welcome to the slipper orchid forum! Glad you could join us! The Phrags that you have are water lovers but not all Phrags like to stay wet like the Phrag species with very long petals.

Grande is one of the easiest to grow plants. Grow it wet but keep it on the moist side in the winter.

Welcome to the forum.

About the same light as for Cattleyas. Leaves too dark means not enough light and too much if they're turning yellow. In other words, 2500 to 3000 FC should be about right. Good luck with your plants. And don't heat too much. Most phrags do pretty well when grown cooler, again just about same lows as Cattleyas.
