Hello all, I have a quick question. I have heard and seen references to 'Reichenbachia' and cannot seem to pin down if it's a book or a series of books. If anyone knows what it is and where it is available(besides the Library of Congress) (as in, library available...I've seen the $200+ prices of single plates online) in the US or perhaps Europe (I may be there in January), I'd appreciate a pointer. Thanks

This is folio-sized book series. See this link:

http://www.shapero.com/php/?catgallery=1&nav=info&booknr=53223&PHPSESSID=bfd33df0ab1a109e277cabc0f4c10f28

I reproduce the ad below, in case the link expires:

Author: SANDER, Henry Frederick Conrad

Title: Reichenbachia. Orchids illustrated and described.

Description: First edition. 2 series in 4 volumes, large folio, 192 chromo lithographed plates, some finished by hand, by Joseph Mansell, the two series bound similarly in contemporary green and half green morocco gilt, gilt edges, a nice set.

Web Price: £ 17000

A thorough survey of all classes of the orchid family. The illustrations are reproduced life-size and are amongst the most accurate representation of the species ever produced. Sander grew orchids on a commercial scale in the St. Albans area, and in the 1890's it was reported that his eponymous company employed twenty collectors to search for orchids as far afield as Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Equador, Mexico, Madagascar, New Guinea, India, and Burma.

It does exist several copies in Brazil, as quite a few copies have been given to Russia, and some were given from Russia to Brazil in "ancient times." Some libraries offer it in Bielorussia, and one in Siberia, at much, much lower prices than that, count 15.000$. I know personnally of 3 copies in Brazil.

Hello, thanks for the pointers. I have recently tracked down a copy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Now I just have to hope that they'll let me look through it....
