I have a moderately weird question...

I have some 4" pots that I want to use for some new plants. They are your ordinary, everyday (W*lM*rt) garden variety 4" pots. Normal height and shape for such a pot. Round, tapered, about as tall as wide, etc...

Does anybody know what the volume of one of those pots would happen to be in pints/ounces, or some similar measurement? Knowing the approximate volume of both 4" and 6" pots of that size would be helpful, as I'm try to figure out how much potting material I need. Ordinarily I'd just buy some locally and eyeball it, but this time around I have to mail order some materials, and I don't want too much excess laying around, since I'm moving in the next few months.

The pots I have are identical to these: http://www.hardwareandtools.com/invt/u117132

I think pots are measured in gallons.I dont know about you but i like to have extra potting stuff on hand.

Larger pots are definately measured in gallons. However, these pots are tiny enough that it might take a few to make up a gallon.

Normally it wouldn't be an issue, but I don't want to have too much extra mix on hand right now, since I know I'm moving some time in the next few months. The last time I moved with bags of mix, I ended up with a horrible, horrible mess. ;)

I can't image the pots are more than a quart each, so I *think* i'll be okay with 4-8qts of mix for 3-4 pots. I'm just looking for confirmation on that.

What will you be growing in the clay pots? Orchids or the common garden plants? Just curious.

Probably Both.

As a tip, there are volume comparisons on the back of most potting soil bags. Never noticed that before...

Anyway, based on a cursory look at the bags I had laying around, here is a good idea (rootball depending) for how much fits in a pot.

4" - 2-4 cups
6" - 1-2 quarts
8" - 2-4 quarts
10" - 5-7 quarts

Totally accidental too. I was re-potting a "Chinese Money Tree" (Pachira macrocarpa or aquatica) for my parents, a plant which was dying off due to pretty ridiculous overwatering, overwatering which had caused a great deal of mineral build-up as well. I went to open the bags of potting mix, and voila, I noticed that almost all the bags in the garage had some sort of volume chart on the bag.
