Does anyone here know or know of my father Paul B. Moore? He's been dead for over 20 years, when he died he was president of the AOS and had been president of the Massachusettes Orchid Society. He was very active in the societies and paphs were his specialty. I acutally had (have?) one named after me and I have some healthy, blooming Paph Paul B. Moore which are considered old plants now.

Hi Minette, welcome to the forum.
Another member here, Greenpaph (Peter) is in NH also, and he may know - I know he lived in MA for a while, maybe the dates co-incide?

Good luck!

Marcus, they are in a greenhouse in CT right now. I moved back to NH from FL in 2001 and I was living in an apartment that was death row for any plant so a friend has them. When I figure out how I will post a picture I took when I was still in FL.
H, thank you for the info. My dad was known all over the world and I remember as a child going to places like Costa Rica, going through the jungles surrounded by men hacking a path for us to follow. My dad would see a plant he wanted and a boy would climb the tree and collect the specimin. This was before customs started coming down on plant imports, I was maybe 6 the first time we went.
The Vaughn's were very close friends with my parents, the AOS tried to move headquarters a couple of times while my dad was still alive, he was a strong presence and prevented that move. After he died it didn't take long for the "newbies" in the AOS to move that headquarters. That wasn't what the Vaughn's intended when they left their property to the AOS.
My mom was active in the AOS right up until she died in Sept. 2000. At that time she was still a member of at least one committee, she hadn't been able to attend any meetings for 17 months before she died though.
My dad had an extensive collection with some rare and valuable plants. After he died my mother sold the collection for only 2000.00 to a man named Sawyer in NH which is how my dad would have wanted it. She kept a handful of plants, I got the Paph Paul B. Moore from her.

Hi NYorchids My dad was also good friends with Eric Young who you may or may not have heard of. I vaugely remember him, he also died young. Richard Peterson who once edited the AOS Bulletin(sp?) was one of the regulars in our home until after I moved out as was his successor Steven Bachelor, both also died young unfortunately. At that time Richard was credited with turning that publication around, it was starting to get stale.
I wish I'd payed more attention, I worked in the greenhouses, worked on shows, took trips to collect them and attended one World Orchid Conference in Colombia when I was 18. Except for the trips it was mostly because I had to LOL. I must have picked up something by osmosis because I do ok, I don't have a lot and I have a variety, I love them all. The only thing I liked about living in Florida from 1992-2001 was that my orchids flourished with little or no attention from me, now I have to work at it LOL but I missed the seasons, landscape and the cold so here I am.
Thank you for your welcome. I'll shut up now LOL but I love to talk about my father, he was a rare man, a man without any serious enemies and there was a reason for that.

There is a Sawyer's Orchids in NH He spoke at one of our meetings yhis past spring. I think he was getting out of the bussiness. He said he lost most of his plants during the winter due to heater failure He didn't bring many plants to sell and If I remember none of them were paphs. . Good to have you aboard. Ray

No Minette Keep on telling us stories about the past it's very very interesting.
Eric Young is well known to orchid growers around the world, but Paul Phillips migt be able to tell much more about him. I also remember Steven Bachelor I think he wrote a lot of stuff for the AOS some 20 years ago or so...

Hi Ray, I'm sorry to hear that about Sawyer, he is the one we sold to but like I said that was about 22 years ago.
I'd never been to his greenhouses and he lives about 35 minutes from me. I did see him once at an orchid show in Manchester, NH, I bought some orchids LOL, he wanted to give them to me but I told him no, I did accept a generous discount though.
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it very much. Thanks for the welcome too.

Minette, I didn't know your father but I have heard of him. I do know a few people that did know him, who have been active in the AOS for many years. Welcome to our little family.

Hi Ron, thanks for the welcome. It's nice to know that my dad is remembered! It's nice to know that someone has heard of him. George Vasquez from Zuma Canyon Orchids wrote me the nicest email about knowing my dad who was a friend of his father's.

Hi Minette,

It's good to have you here. The posts about your father are very interesting. You must have had a great time growing up and learning about orchids - especially the Paphs. I'm glad that you found us! I'm a relative "newbee," having been growing Paphs for less than 3 years but I'm hooked on them. Please keep posting!

Best,

Minette,

Welcome to a wonderful forum! I knew your Dad! I use to visit him in Wayland at least once a year when he would have his annual sale! I learned a number of paph growing tips over the years from him! I new him for about 10 years. We lost a great man when Paul died! I would see him at the MOS meetings often as well! He was so easy going, great personality and willing to share his knowledge. He also had superb plants (especially paphs and lycastes)!
I also knew Richard Peterson and Stephen Batchelor. Stephen left me a few of his plants prior to him going to florida. They too were wonderful, giving people! I spent many hours at the AOS headquarters when it was in Massachussetts talking with them.
My family and I also live in NH (North Haverhill).

Thank you Susan, I'm glad to be here!

PETER!!! Thank you SO much for being here at all. Yes, we had the sales in Wayland every year LOL. That house is still there but the greenhouses are gone and the fields and woods are all built with houses now. It makes me wonder about all those Lady Slippers my dad propagated, we had SO many of them.....
My mom died in Sept. 2000, she was living in Lincoln then (about a mile up Oxbow Rd. from our old house, same neighborhood) and this past winter my brother and I had to sell the summer house in Sunapee, taxes are too out of sight, we couldn't afford to keep it.
I think that might be one of the reasons I'm looking for connections to my dad.
Thank you so much for remembering!!!!!
