I have heard of someone who uses wine cork as potting mix. especialy for b. nodossa and it's hybrids. he doesn't even chop them or mix them with anything else. what do you think?
It could be very useful to me because I like drinking wine. :)

I have seen this done before. Anything can really be used for media. We have moved to lava rock for nodosa and some of it's hybrids.

I sorta tried this a few years ago with my sarcs. I managed to "fill" two pots with corks. All did O.K. for a while until the cork started breaking down which it did about 4 months in to the experiment. Once started the breakdown progressed pretty quickly.
As a potting mix cork makes a great mount :)

I believe Rich from other forums does this and sucessfully as well. He uses a basket and I suspect that that would help it from breaking down.

I'm so glad you posted this question! I have been saving my corks to try the same thing! It's been really hard work too, drinking all that wine. I keep telling my husband that I am going to save so much money on potting mix... :innocent:

I use plastic coke bottles as pots... seeing as we don't have those pretty, opaque square pots that Heather has...
and now I can use the wine corks as well...
now I just need to figure out what to do with the packaging of all those crisps I eat.... sheesh... the money I save I am so gonna buy a flowering size roth mt milais... :D
cheers

hi tim,
don't joke about money saving. I decided I'll save all the money I get as refund on empty glass beer bottles and save it for orchids. after 4 months it got me a nice blooming tolumnia.
ofcourse my husband had to raise his drinking rate for that, but I heard no complaints. 8)
