That's a new start, Gloria.
Spike will come from the crown of the fan. :)
New starts are good also.

i know very little about phrags
but i would say almost absolutely not
the old growth, maybe, but then again, i don't know anything about how big an eric young has to be to bloom

It doesn't look like your Eric Young has bloomed yet. I'd watch for a spike from the mature growth, and then if all goes well, when the start matures, the timing of which, of course will depend upon your culture and conditions.

Congrats! On new and younger plants, I would much rather see new starts emerging than spikes.

Could someone take a pic of a previously flowered growth showing the short dried spike stub left. This would give her a visual of where and what to look for if she buys a more mature plant in the future. I'd do it but my wife has the camera at work. :?

:) Thanks everyone. John that would be very cool :D
Ah Another question - For blooming Phrags is it good lighting or cool'ish conditions more important ?

hey, I posted the pics in a thread here:

As for the blooming question:
while in bud - same as normal growing conditions, only NEVER let a bud develop in direct (even diffused direct) sunlight
while in bloom - cooler, less light (helps bloom longevity)
