So, I'm wondering whether species or hybrids are the favorites!

I've never done this before, so do post particulars, even if you cannot vote for it okay? Thanks!!

I'm such a curious girl!

I like species mostly but I do have quite a few hybrids in my collection that I love very much!

For me, I think hybrids are easy to grow. Thank You

Because of CITES, we need to preserve (and cross) the captive genetic species (since we can't really collect any more from the wild). But we don't need to have ALL of us doing this!

Now that I have grown out a few flasks, I realize that some plants are just prettier and faster growers than others. Selective breeding - especially with hybrids, is just going to make a better stock of flower - easier to grow, easier to bloom, with superior color, form, and posture.

All that said - I love my species, temperamental beasts though they may be sometimes...

My two other poll options don't really work well w/ the others, sorry about that!

Anyway, keep the answers coming!
I certainly *have* more species, but as Eric indicated - we'll see if I can bloom any of them!

I would answer yes, I like them all, but here lately it seems that I like a lot of hybrids.

My favorite? Probably Paphiopedilum (anitum x sanderianum).

I generally prefer the species. In most cases I don't think the hybrids offer any real improvements over the species except being easier to grow. This is particularly the case for the Brachys. I primarily grow species, and hybrids of Brachys and multiflorals. I'm really not into hybrids across groups. Some of them look a bit unnatural to me - eg. multiflorals crossed with Brachy's or Parvi's.

Hi David!

Nice to see you here! I also agree with you. Some of the hybrids are just plain hideous and unnatural looking!

At this point I prefer species. Like so many others, flowering them is another thing. I guess I just like to get down to the fundamental thing. Kevin

I prefer species. I fantasize about jungle adventures in Borneo or Vietnam when I crawling through my greenhouse. The flowers are already fantastic enough.

Well, I fantasize about jungle adventures in Borneo, but just crawling around, since I have no greenhouse!

I'd love to go to Borneo and Peru and crawl around a bit! LOL!!

Turning into an interesting poll!

Quit fantasizing and let's go. Summer 2006: Borneo and the Philippines

While I enjoy seeing species more than hybrids, I find hybrid vigor a big advantage in getting a paph that will bloom. I get to blooms three times as fast with hybrids (generally) thabn with species.

I'd say I'm a species nut but I do have a fair number of hybrids. It may also be that I've killed more of my species than the hybrids.

Species or hybrid, hybrid or species? I can't pick! I like them all!

Echoing my sentiments. Although I tend toward hybrids in Phrags and species in Paphs. But to every rule, there is an exception!
