Hi Gloria!

Eric Young should be a very easy hybrid to grow and they are fast growing plants. Provide lots of water, light, humidity and air flow. Please post pics when you get one.

Hey there Lagoon

I pretty much got my first Phrags in the last few months also. Let's compare notes/progress :)

Although it isn't really fair for you as I'm coming in to Spring while you're on the downhill slope to Autumn.

I also have besseae by longifolium (Eric Young) as well as a Sorcerer's Apprentice. I've been told these are excellent starter phrags as they're "hard" to kill. Hmmmmm, We'll see.

Cheers
Stephan

Eric Young is a good choice! Then again, I think most phrags are bit better starter plants than other genera. Especially the water loving kind. But it might teach a newbie like myself to overwater others also, because of it's splendid results.

Another good one for beginners is Grande if you like the really long twisty petals. I have posted pics of my Grande, here is the link. Phrag Grande (http://www.slipperorchidforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20)

Hi all ....... Thanks for ur encouragement. Hard to kill eh?! ha ha Great!! Thats just what i'm looking for. Ur on Stephen would be great to compare notes.

Yep Tadd i dunno i like to water my orchids too so i think these are a better choice for me.Plus i love the flowers more. I guess you could just overpot to reduce waterings too. But then again from what i understand ALOT of orchids like to be potbound.
LOL Pete is funny you mentioned that one i was eyeballing the grande for about 4 weeks now. SO i decided to get one of those as well - Thanks for the suggestion :) I can see you guys are going to be real inablers

Hi Gloria!

If you have a digital camera, please post photos of your new plants. You will be amazed at how the rest of us forum members will drool over them and/or will love them.

Phrags are relatively new to me, and I haven't gotten any to bloom yet on my own. But mine look really happy and they are easy keepers. Please share your experiences. It helps us all learn.

And (of course) you will be capable of exercising perfect restraint and will not buy any more. Yeah, Right! :whoo:

Best,

I think that when a collection gets as large as yours Stephan, then it's alot easier to hold out for a few months.
But when your collection is small like mine, you start poking around after 2-3 weeks... :D

I'll be very interested to hear what your plants from Paramount are like. I've never ordered from them although they did have a few things I was interested in. They made me a bit nervous when they didn't give a plant size on their web catalogue. Do you know WHO Paramount is? ie, who owns it?

There are a couple more a bit closer to you that you might like to try:

Doug and Terry Kennedy have "Orchids in Our Tropics" just north of Toronto :

http://www.orchidsinourtropics.com/

and Caludio Rossi runs "Cloud's Orchids" down near St. Catharines:

http://www.cloudsorchids.com/

Both have lots of Paphs and Phrags but you won't get any great bargains at either.

Sam Tsui of the "Orchid Inn" near Chicago had both plants and flasks for sale at the Montreal Orchid Show this spring. Sam is the best in my book - best plants and flasks I've ever bought and everything I got from him exceeded it's description. Great prices too so save a few pennies for Sam in case he comes back to Canada next Spring. Super nice guy too.

Not to feed your coming addiction but...

Cheers,
kpb

Hi Kpb ... Thanks for the links! A few weeks ago i has send off a 3 seperate of emails to Orchids in our tropics - They had a few things i wanted i was after some "Jewels" Not sure why but i never heard from them. This is actually why i did go to paramount. I also heard good things about paramount - Plants were nice size and prices were very decent. I also thought they had some nice stuff .So i did end up ordering from them.

Bryon and Jerry ( I think - please excuse me if i got the name wrong) are the owners i believe. I have not delt with Jerry but with Bryon - He was very quick to answer my emails and any questions i had. Told him right from the start i was fairly new too orchids and would probably be asking him a number of questions. Also, This would be my first order via internet since ive really only pick up a few at the local plant stores and from home depot.I find Bryon is very easy to talk too and will encourage you to ask questions .Very nice guy in my books.

But of course i'm also interested in hearing about other places to shop. Ooooh we cant close any doors to the Orchid world

The plants listed above will be my second order from paramount. I'm looking forward to this order probably more then the first. I think anyone can make a first good impression, lets see what they can do with the seond one - My money is on this one!
They do list "some" sizes of pots not many tho' its more discriptions of seedlings - Bloom size and NOW bloom. As i was told that pot sizes were not the most important to them. They pay more attention the the upper part - the size of the plants and whether they are bloom size or not this is what they reflect their prices on as far as i understand. NONE are shipped in bare roots either. I thought the packing was just Great - NO MESS, Orchids were all as they left.Nothing was even bend.(I was surprized about that) I was expecting orchids to be squished up and bark mix all over the bottom with plants heaving out of pots. YEP i guess i was thinking the worst. Packing was done very well all plants in real good shape. They took the time to care ~ And it showed!! I would be glad you let you know what happeneds with the second order .
Ive never been to any orchid shows in montreal. I grew up in montreal, live there for alot of years ( now just 10 mins outside of the city) its nice to see you had some good expriences here :D

Thanks very much for the welcome Peter - I would be glad to posts some photo's. Just give me some time, I dont have alot of it these days. I love to look at everyones pics - Sends chills up my spine Eeeeeeeee and it keeps me adding to the list *Smack*

Hi Tadd .... Thong orchids? ha ha I had no idea they made these sounds kinda .... kinky (Smirks)
Thanks for the suggessions Gump i may look into this.
