I had a few capsules ready for harvest today, so I popped them open and checked out the seed.

All of the capsules have mature seed with embryos so that's a good step toward getting germination.

The capsules opened were:

Paph primulinum var purpurescens 157 days after pollination (got the pollen from Paphreek  )

Paph armeniacum (selfed), 126 days post pollination, and

Paph appletonium (selfed), 252 days post pollination.

The structure of paph seeds is fairly distinct between the differnt subgenera. Parvi seeds are small, roundish, and dense. Barbata seeds are the biggest, but have the smallest embryos located in the center.

I'll be sending this seed off to Troy's next week.

Wow impressive haul. Who is this Troy I hear mentioned every so often? Is he the go-to guy in the States? I have yet to mature a seed-pod, but it would be nice to know who to send one to should it ever appear.

Troy Meyers runs the Meyers Conservatory. www.troymeyers.com

Its kind of a coop for species orchid flasking. I highly recommend it.

None of these have been posted yet on Troy's site. He often waits for germination though.

 Yay for the seeds and yay for you breeding the species!!

I found out this week my wardii germinated. Low yield, but it's my first slipper germination.

Way to go Shady.

The suk capsule from our joint venture is still progresing nicely too.

Was just checking my records at Troy's so far I have 12 paph/ phrag germinations, and 3 other orchid species germinated.

Probably about another 12 or so sent in but waiting for germination.

Rick's Paph primulinum var purpurescens, armeniacum and appletonium are up on Troy's site if anyone's interested. Hope his germination rate is better than usual!

There wasn't allot of armenicum seed, so I wouldn't get my hopes up for a ton of those, but lots of appletonium and primulinum seed.

Germination rates are all over the board. Troy got 300 to 400+ on my suk and wardii seed, the initial germination on lowii also cleared 300, but many of those flasks crashed later on. Hirsutisimum is surprisingly low at about 50. Phrags have done well too. At one point there were about 900 pearcei seedlings from 3 capsules. Seems like the average on Paphs is about 200.

Harvested my self cross philippinense leviagatum on 26th Sept. One of the the 2 pods turned slightly brownish so I decided to havest it. It was crossed on 24th April. This works out to be about 5 months.

Good job Joe.

I recently submitted some philippinense seed too, and those capsules went in 4 or 5 months too. Philippinense does do things fast.

Who is flasking your seed?
