Saw this weird looking P insigne in my friend’s place. The photo is not very clear but you’ll notice the unusual pouch! All the blooms had the same characteristic. Is it a mutant? Is it a disease? Are there any similar reports from the other paph species?

I don't know much about slipper diseases but if it's identical in all pouches and the plant looks otherwise healthy then its probably genetic. a very beautiful mutation in my opinion.

Looks like some kind of mutation to me.

Cool looking little barbs! Not sure but I would keep it for the novelty aspect of it. Tell your friend to give it to me...

Babies are a way a long way off if I am lucky and it takes. I hope so! I will have my 400MH up by then!

It's neat looking! I'll take it since Tadd is out of room. Someone HAS to make the sacrifice, even though it's tough work.

Thanks everyone. Now will have to run and get a division for myself first! Was hesitant earlier thinking it might be a disease.

I've seen pointies like that on the pouches of brachys sometimes. Usually just one or two. And then there are none the next time it blooms making me think it's something environmental. Did your friend ever bloom it before and were they normal?

Yeah, most times this happens it's environmental, even on multiple blooms. I have a primulinum that has been producing all flowers with split lower sepals, despite the fact that it bloomed normally last year. Peloric flowers (you know, with petals replacing pouches and the like) can also occur sometimes for environ. reasons, but then be OK with the next flowering.

I have had several plants that produced pouches with those little points....including a Red Dragon and ang-thong. In my experience, it appears to be genetic, and occurs with every bloom. Sometimes its restricted to one point on the pouch tip, usually its several all over the pouch. Occasionally a plant will produce a single bloom with a point, and not do it again, but usually its a consistent problem. When more than one point (I refer to them as pimples...) occurs, it will definitely appear on all blooms, all the time. Take care, Eric
