After many months of effort, I have successfully imported (legally!!!) good quantities of rare and choice Cypripedium hybrids from Svante Malmgren. While these hybrids are relatively easy to acquire in the EU, they are very tough to acquire in the states! They are Cyp. Calceolus x Macranthum Alba, Cyp. Parviflorum x Rebunense, & Cyp. hotei x tibeticum. They are all three years out of flask and should bloom in 2010!
I am particularly excited about the tibeticum and rebunense hybrids.
They are planted in outdoor beds in a mixture of sand, turface, & perlite...protected under 12 inches (30 cm) of snow. This week our temperatures dropped to 15 degrees below zero F with wind chills to -35 F!!!!

Nice! The hotei x tibeticum sounds like an interesting one!
It sure was freezing here, and I am glad that it isn't that cold now!

Hi Mark,
those are nice looking plants. Good luck with flowering them.
I have one of the same hybrids from Svante on order from a UK company.
It is hotei x tibeticum.
There is some super potential here for vigorous dark flowered hybrids.
Do you know whether any of this cross have flowered yetand if so what it looked like/
Regards,
David

No, the hotei hybrid has not bloomed yet. We are on the ground floor with this one! I'm very happy to get some of these special plants to the USA.

I checked the cyps today (march 28) and they are doing great! They were covered over the winter, but it looks like they are very hardy! So far, So good! ;)

Was it difficult to import them?? I would like to import some flasks from Phytesia, but I'm not certain how to do it. They supply CITES and phyto certs. Do I need anything else??? I'm a hobbyist ... I don't do anything commercial.

Thanks
